Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

its definitly not silent...

trans issue still lingers. I am going to contruct a trans pressure gauge of power washer parts and check my line pressures out. I am hoping I can get the guy who helped build the trans over there tonight. Other than that its ready for a drive.

I didn't think so many people were watching this thread, at homecoming I had at least 20 people ask me about it. I noticed I wasn't introduced as the autocross typhoon guy of the group but rather as the hotdog girlfriend blazer truck guy.

I have the trans pressure gauge here if you need it

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

thanks ken,

I ended up using a 4 dollar 250 psi air compressor 1/8 npt fitting'ed pressure gauge and screwing it straight into the side of the driver-side checking port with a little teflon tape. At idle in part I was seeing about 80 psi, and in drive it was something like 160 just above idle but jumped up to some unrecognizable number around 200psi when we were driving at low speed (I had the gauge pointed up so that we could see it from inside the cab, though the large 4x4 shifter hole that remains in the floor).

This was after we found that my dipstick for my trans had gotten switched with another, and that this one was about 4 inches longer...it turns out that 4 inches was worth nearly 7 quarts of fluid that we pumped out to bring it back into spec. It seemed to drive a bit better, but there are still a few bugs to track down. The tune is a bit off, and I need to get better with this tuning software. I believe the issue now lies with the motor having a breaking up issue around 2500 rpm, and the stall of the converter being closer to 3200...these things together are killing any build up of speed, although the way it sits 20 mph is pretty possible...I'm going to spend more time with it tomorrow, tonight was spent mostly fixing a fuel leak...

It lives...still need some kinks worked out, and this is the first attempt at a launch, or even heavy throttle. gonna need anti lag to get the thing to launch better. after about 20 feet the turbo halfway spooled to 10 psi and it spun all 4 and felt pretty neat...

Jesus that's loud!

My girlfriend was in the room when I watched the video and she screamed at me because it was so loud at 8am before work :D

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

Yes!

also, thinking back on it, the chance of it even hiting 10psi is slim...it would do that on the street while driving was the only reason I assumed it.

I need to hook up a switch for the anti-lag, go through and locktite some of the stuff...everywhere...because it shakes like hell. I also need to figure out what went wrong bolting the core support down because even though it has a bolt in both sides, one side is obviously not attached to the frame...I also need a switch for the trans lock-up, which I hope fixes the super slipping tranny feel. its PI Vig. 3200 stall converter and it doesnt really feel like my other one in the ty, its just slop basically up until 3000 rpm, but it could be the exhaust making it seem like its working harder than it is. I hope its not the trans slipping but that launch kinda made me feel better about that.

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

I've been tinkering with it, playing with the tune a bit and fixing little issues they come up. still has a leaky trans cooler line, but I think I've fixed everything else. I'm happy with the way its put together, for example I had a leak from the top of my gas tank and within 4 minutes I had the tank down and hanging so I could work on it. Other than that nothings really new, but its slowly progressing.

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

thanks,

also yes, in the pic when I was mocking up the exhaust the turbo was clocked all dumb, in post 67 theres a pic that somewhat shows it in its new less dumb position.

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

well, I was finally getting some time to go out and start tuning it and got my first drive where it actually ran pretty smooth, up until #4 spark plug wire fell off, but that was a simple fix. Unfortunately the inevitable happened after hitting the ditch kinda funny; the exhaust holding up the turbo cracked. Just a slight crack right after the number 2 cylinder, but I knew it was done. I built a brace off of the frame out of 1 inch round stock and bolted it to the T4 flange and repaired the damage to the header, I am hoping that this helps support the weight a bit better, it def. seems more solid. I'll keep an eye on it, I'm glad I haven’t wrapped it yet, I can prolly do the rest of the pipe and leave that area uncovered just so I can keep an eye on it. I am hoping that the motor being mounted solidly to the frame works out with this solid mount, if not I'll have to beef up the mount on the turbo and add a second flex pipe into place.

I am also going to have to do some work on my kickdown cable, it seems the bracket on the TB is a bit too long and is limiting me to 77% throttle, which spells bad news for timing advance. Shouldn't be a big deal

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

well, I figured out why I couldn't seem to tune it. I installed the harmonic balencer wrong and may have damaged the timing set. It appears to be ok, but I need to take it apart and check it out. The harmonic balancer directly effects timing and it being off like it was would explain all of my issues. Also explains why my antilag setup make its run smoother instead of instantly kills it...

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

Are you going to put fender flares on it? Thinking your trans cooler intake may take on a lot of mud.....though you could pressure wash it out. How about a snorkel though the hood? Great project!

Your out of Time. Get that thing running for the Dream Cruise. I for one am anxious to see it running.

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

I still have 3 weeks, with some luck it will be ready. The reason it hasn't been done for the last month is because I though I was retarded and couldn't tune a MAF setup, on top of an E85 setup. after setting the antilag up and seeing how wrongly it effected driving I talked to some people and they very quickly pointed me to this new issue. after it is fixed it should be ready to drive. Even with the timing being awful I've put a few miles on it, and it seems to be ok otherwise.

I've got my fingers crossed...

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

good news, fixed the timing. I thought I was a total retard for not getting it together right the first time but it actually proved to be tricky to get it all lined up, as the key sits a good 1/4 inch behind the cover, and on the fwd stuff its easy to get right down and look that key right in the harry eyeball, but from up top its much more tricky.

with the help of a good friend I was able to get my tuning hardware and software setup and started tuning it last night. All seems well so far, and it did a pretty wicked awd burnout in my driveway. Its a totally diff. truck now that the timings not 70* advanced...who would have guessed?

I still need to pull the trans and get the new flex plate in though, I am hoping to have time to do it tonight or wednesday.

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

lol, sorry about that man, that vid is old, its a totally different truck now, sounds different and accelerates different :boink:

However I noticed that there was some brown sludge in my coolant yesterday, not alot, but enough to catch my attenchin. This usually points to a head gasket, and concidering it overheated 2 times thats possible, but it really runs well for a blown head gasket. I also suspect the front cover gasket I just did, although that unlikly, or it could be contamination left in the coolant after I changed my front cover gasket. I'm going to pull the oil out and look at it, and do a leakdown test on the motor to be sure.

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

turned out to be a front pump gasket. While the motor was out I did a leakdown test and re-torqued the heads. Its back in and running as of right now, and seems to be running fine. Its needs some tune work done, I started to mess with it before it got dark and its a bit better now, and can drive down the road fine, but needs some fuel taken away and another bit of time put into it.

Re: Turbo 3800 blazer

its getting better all the time, its got a few miles on it at this point, and starting tonight it should have a few more on it with a tune thats not gonna melt anything.

tasks left as of right now:
get a power steering setup so I stop melting pumps (sorry autozone, its your own fault for having lifetime parts)
figure out how to make the trans suck less before it destroys itself
alignment
balls
