TurboLink ???

This is the kind of thing we discussed in the other thread.

I was going to go as far as to make a pc dedicated for in truck use. Parts are cheap - you can get a motherboard with fanless cpu that uses regular harddrives & memory for 100 bucks- i can get a hd & memory - powersupply for in car is like 60 bucks, then make a case.

cheap - only expensive part is the damn display. then once you get a display, I was worried about theft.

If they had an indash VGA display that was affordable, it'd be a done deal, but there isn't yet.

geeks out there - anyone have the ability to physically remove a screen from a laptop and remote mount it?
if so, easy out for a screen, no adapter nec.

I don't think the computer puts out enough power thru that conection to allow you to lengthen those wires.The wires are on a flet plastic ribbon. But you could try! Good Luck!

That would solve the problem if you have a laptop that you're willing to hack up for a carputer (if it could handle the extra length on the wires as stated). But for just building a carputer, you're not any closer. A laptop screen is nearly half the cost of a new laptop. Someone here fried the screen on their new Dell, and it was $900 for a new one. Just the part, not labor or anything.

It might be an option if you have access to a dead laptop or a really slow one you're willing to sacrifice for a modern carputer though...

Just to ramble in. The best and easiset solution would be a touch panel. I've been thinking on this for a while now... Along with a custom dash project. :roll:

FYI, A panasonic color touchscreen 10.4 wwith a keyboard and cables costs 2200.00. There are others but we sell mostly these. I have pics but do not know how to add them.

i finaly got home with sy 112. we had a hell of a time playing with her and trying to get it tuned up a little. glad to see we have a thread on turbolink but unfortunately no one asked a very important question IMO. if i buy turbolink can someone who is using data master somehow be able to view my runs and give advice and so forth. cause i am interested in turbolink but i really like the idea of sending runs to others so they can review and advise. either way i need to get one or the other very soon so i can monitor my runs.

That is a good question. Datamaster you can download program for free, and view all the files you want, making it easy for everybody to view and help you.

If turbolink has a specific file format, and no free viewer, help could be limited from others. I would think, maybe since they have a "special" cable they would give the software away as a viewer so other people could help. It would sure be a question I would want an answer to before buying it. For someone new the syty world, that would be a big help.

DICLAIMER: I have not seen turbolink yet!

I believe it can be exported to an excel friendly output. I'll play with the software tonight and let you know.

BG is right, Turbo Link exports files to an excel friendly format. it does not, however, export directly to DM files. Turbo Link can import DM files, I believe, so if you had DM, you could send your files to someone with T-Link and they could view them, but not the other way around.

That along with price being ~$100 more then DM, would turn me away.

Maybe they can make some improvements.

Otherwise what I have seen looks good.

as i understand it with the sy/ty world discount that the prices are roughly the same. i really like the way the turbolink looks and the preliminary stuffs sound really user friendly, but like i said being as i am new to tuning these trucks i really would like the ability to send my files to a friend who has DM. forgive me but i'm not really all that computer literate. but you are talking excel friendly. what exactly does that mean? if i have turbolink and send my runs to someone who has excel THEN they can look at them???

There is a demo version of TurboLink that lets you open .ecm files. This version will not let you connect to a vehicle but only acts as a viewer. You can use this version to exchange TurboLink files for playback.

You can download this demo for free @ www.turbo-link.com I believe there is a link off the main page. It is also under support and downloads section of the site.

it isn't perfect, but at least you can clip some data. once you export it to excel or word, it's easier to work with IMO.

I was wondering about the trigger functions - it would be slick if there was trigger functions to automatically STOP recording...that way I could drive around, log only certain conditions, not have to worry about saving logs... just turn the truck off, and the log was already there. dunno, didn't see much about saving the runs, naming - i saw the autosave feature - but do you have to have a name specified? is it generated by date or when you first connect ?

sweet, looks like my turbolink is getting ordered and hopfully expressed shipped(possibly overnite). i downloaded the demo but didn't even think about it being used to playback files that i might send to someone. anyway thanks for the input and hopefully i will post some runs or something along those lines after i get the software in the mail. LET THE TUNING BEGIN!!!!!!!

I've not dowloded the free version yet, so I've a question. Does turbolink have a performance calculator like DM's quarter mile estimator? I really like this feature to compare runs performance wise, one of the most usefull features for me.

i've downloaded the demo and looked all over the website and haven't found a performance calculator(may just have overlooked). kind of sucks, that was a very good addition to the DM. please someone correct me and tell me TL comes with performance calculator!!!

pretty sure it doesn't... best you could do is have someone create an Excel macro to calc it from exported data, unless you begged the Turbolink peeps :wink:
