Re: Ty# 0371 Rebuild

I personally would start out with a custom tune. Obviously the turbo is not stock. The fact is no off the shelf chip works right when you start modding these trucks. Work yes, work RIGHT no.

Who is going to be my best bet closest to me to tune it? I got a mustang guru near me that im good friends with, but I think I'd rather work with someone that deals with syty's

Re: Ty# 0371 Rebuild

As a new owner I would see if you could put it back stock for now, put turbo on the shelf (if that is only mod) and get it running right first, stock chip, etc.

Then we can move forward and teach you to tune, best tuner is an owner IMO.

That's where im in a dilemma...its got the turbo, headers, down pipe, 3" exhaust, converter, cam and head work...previous owner doesn't have any of the cam numbers either. Also I don't have any stock parts to replace what I have...

Still plays with trucks
Re: Ty# 0371 Rebuild

You could start with one of the "starter" tunes and biuld from there. With all those upgrades, a stck chip wont be much good.

Got the rest of the glass out. The more charred stuff out of the way, the better it looks.

Yes, that's true. And the further you get into it, the more you realize that the damage is far more extensive than you at first thought......Burn-Jobs are brutal. Good Luck.

Here's mine:

Very nice job...your burn job looked quite a bit worse that mine though. Check out my photobucket acct. And every single truck on there are rebuilt totals...this (outside of the "quirks" these trucks have) will not be hard. My entire family drives rebuilders, plus we have been racing and fabricating for years...we are equipped to get it done, I think my biggest struggle will be tuning.

Gonna have the engine out shortly...finally got the lift freed up. Anybody familiar where the converter may have came from?

Re: Ty# 0371 Rebuild

Thanks guys. Nick, I don't have a real date set, especially now that im at the hospital because a transmission fell off of the jack onto my dads arm and cut him pretty bad...he is going into surgery in a few. So, I gotta work through this now.

Re: Ty# 0371 Rebuild

Haven't been able to work on the ty much in the last few weeks, but got a chance to tear into the engine today...this thing ALMOST started launching parts out of the side of it. Gonna get it to the machine shop later in the week. Thinking about looking into a complete rotating assembly to go back in it since im this far.

Re: Ty# 0371 Rebuild

Good ole #4. Seems like a majority of major problems involve this cylinder. And another thing: This truck was obviously running when it caught fire. So it was in this condition, but running. My position for years has been "ALL SyTy's need engine work. Even if they're running". This reinforces that observation, but it's not usually this bad. Normally it's main bearings and a crank.

What did I say earlier about "You'll find more as you get into it."... No way did you expect to be doing an engine, did you? Welcome to SyTy Restoration. Or, How to spend 4X as much as you thought you were going to when you took this on...

I never really had an easy feeling when I talked to the previous owner and he stressed that it "needs rings". That's what led me to going ahead and pulling the heads. NEVER have I seen anything ONLY need rings...Although, I never expected to see a chunk missing out of one piston!
True, it would be nice to not have dig around in the engine, but the insurance of knowing that good stuff will go back in it is worth it. I would have always had the thought in the back of my mind...Is this thing gonna come apart, every time I squeeze on it?
It's gonna cost some extra money, but at least I wont have to second guess anything. ;)
