ty #1988-Project motor swap

A few months ago right after I got done replacing my torque converter, my engine started puffing out alot of white smoke from the valve covers, and forced oil out of every weak gasket. I think it was dying a slow death since the day I got it because it always leaked oil like none other.

Anyways I just picked up a new motor this past weekend from John Gerber  Motor came out of his typhoon and only has 10,000 miles on it, and was just refreshed with new pistons, rings, bearings, gaskets, and ARP head bolts.

I plan on running a 20g turbo, 50lb injectors, air/air intecooler, and code 59.

Nice work ! Now I know who to call when I tear into my motor down the road

! That #2 piston is a hum dinger, I bet that your ty looked like it was coal powered

. Hey, what torque conveter are you running? I like how it matches the color of your ty... I'll give you a call this sometime this weekend to "catch up". I've been a VERY busy beaver since new years...

frame looks 10 times cleaner then my midwest truck.

lookin good.

That Typhoon had an automatic undercoating feature if I recall correctly. Also had some interesting frame/suspension geometry going on.

:rotf: you got that right, it ended up rusting from the inside out see this thread for that.

I realize this is an old post / thread, but...

I can see where it would have been smoking / blow-by like crazy. (A lot of people overlook/forget/don't know that the ring has to seal to the piston just as well as seal to the cylinder wall).

Was the engine making any 'knocking noises'???

Thanks,
DP

Yea after about a week of driving it around smoking everyone out, it started to make some very interesting noises at idle, and it wouldnt idle at all anymore. It still ran good though at higher rpms, I even took it the track to get one more run in before winter(some said I was nuts and wouldnt make it back home) and it ran a 13.5 with a bad launch :rotf:

It had a cracked windshield and both pieces of door glass were also cracked because the thing was flexing so bad the last time I rode in your Typhoon. It wasn't flexing from a ton of power either, just a lack of structural integrity due to rust.

I always believed that your typhoon would benefit from being put on a frame jig and straightened out. I don't think Jeremy ever got around to that. But with all the driveline problems experienced from the geometry problems, it should be done if you haven't done it yourself.

Yea jeremy replaced all the glass when I bought it, after I fixed the driverside body mount that seemed to fix alot of issues, the body was sagging down about a inch in that area and the door wouldnt even close at that point. I still cant figure out why it rusted so bad, my 91 blazer has a close to 100,000 miles on it and isnt rusted anything close to this typhoon was.

When he bought that truck it had been used and abused by a truck driver. It had the living piss beaten out of it. Looked like it had never been hand washed or waxed in its life. The drivetrain was a complete disaster. Everything was a mess cosmetically and mechanically. Jeremy did the best that he could with the resources he had, but eventually other priorities made him sell the truck. He never was happy with the condition of the truck and if he had the money and time it would have been in a lot better shape and probably Jeremy wouldn't have parted with it.

small update-painted the frame, cleaned up the firewall, and covered the wiring harness in flame retardant wire loom.

Re: ty #1988-Project motor swap

Well after fighting with the solid motor mounts for the past 2 days, I finally got the motor in.
I had to drill out the holes on the drivers side frame mount to slide it forward because there was no way it would ever fit. Once I did that it ALMOST bolted together, I then had to remove the engine mounts and drill those holes out and after that I was able to get everthing bolted together.

I polished my intake for more of a brushed look, only worked on it for 3 hours or so by hand and it doesnt look that bad at all.

I also ordered some 60# injectors instead of the 50# because they seem to be easier to tune with from what ive read on the code59 forum, I got them cheaper than the 50#s so thats a plus. Turbo is being built, and it isnt gonna be a ordinary 20g :)
