Ty charging system issue?

A couple of weeks ago, I had the doors open while cleaning the interior of the Typhoon. When I was done, the battery acted dead, and wouldn't start. Quicky tap with the jump box and it fired right up.
I ran the idle up to 1500rpm and watched the gauge, and it worked it's way up from 9 to 14v. Took a low speed tour around town, parked it, and it refired just fine. No problems the next morning.
Later in the day, I went 15 miles to the next town and noticed the volt gauge swaying from 9 to 14v again. 1500 - 2000 rpm, in town, 35-40 mph, the gauge looked normal. 2200 rpm on the highway, and it would drop down to 9 again. Back in town, the gauge leveled out, until I stopped for the lights - back to 9.

No problems reported last week. Yesterday, my uncle took the truck on a 150 mile round trip errand run, and had no problems. Today, it wouldn't start again. Quicky tap with the jump box, and we're back to square one.

It's going in tomorrow for a battery, alt, charging system check, and hopefully we'll know more. Turning on/off accessories doesn't really point to any one thing, so maybe it's a ground wire issue; I don't know.

Sorry for the long post - I'm new and trying to be thorough.

Alt or loose connection is where I would start. Where in MI are you?

My uncle dropped it off this morning here in Marshall - haven't heard back yet. The battery's from '05, and the mech. said maybe the regulator in the alt. Then they gave him heck for not driving it enough.

X2 on the bat, it's 7 yrs old fur ch*&^ sake. :lol: Alt voltage? Hmmm. Have you ever fooled with the wiring? Check for loose connection at the back of the alt. Otherwise maybe it's kaput also. But I bet it's just the bat and like gbnkiller said it's a bad cell which can pull the voltage down like that.

when i got my Ty, i had if for a year before the battery died (from leaving the interior lights on). battery was date stamped 2001. and that was only about 6 months ago.

anyway, good advice above.

Well, a weeks worth of load testing, meter pokin', and a couple of road trips has revealed nothing...

I'm going to get ahold of it again on my days off and clean the engine compartment. I'll check as many grounds and plugs as I can find, and see where that leads me. I'll guess we'll wait for the smoke and narrow it down from there.

Wow: I've been gone awhile...

The battery has tested fine, the alt tested fine, and there aren't any suspicious looking wires or connections. BUT, since the alt was removed, tested, and replaced, there haven't been any issues with the dead battery or bouncing amp guage.

Amazing what clean contacts will do, huh?

I have seen issues with the diode trio cause what you have described. If it acts up again, I'd lean to the alt.
