This will be an ongoing thread of each mod/repair/whatever done to ty1770. Most of the work is done as the truck is nearing completion; "ongoing thread" means it is going to take a lot of time to post about each sub-project in detail with corresponding pictures. The purpose of the thread will be 1) to document the work done to the truck in a detailed fasion, and 2) to provide any kind of help or info for anyone that can use it. For now, the pictures are 95% complete save for some general descriptions, so with out further delay...

sub-projects will be posted as time allows, enjoy!

Nice pics so far.....Great organization as well.

Quick question.....

Do you mind if I steal PART of this picture?

I have an idea for a cool background from the radiator fins on the left, but don't want to just STEAL the picture :D

Preface

Preface

I bought the truck with 97K miles in 0ctober of 2004. I am the third owner. The condition was as follows...

Paint: decent, but not original
Cladding: all present, minor issues, no bolts used for front arches, just double sided tape
Interior: in good shape, door hinges bad, weather stripping broken, missing firewall grommet, water in/on/under the carpet, steering wheel peeled on top, missing spare tire/cover, ghetto stereo system installed, dealer installed GM alarm
Engine: mechanicly sound and running. Poor tune, AFPR, Kenne Bell intake, ATR Pitbull chip, intercooler hardlines converted to rubber, 160 degree thermo, recent half ass tune up with half ass parts.
Exhaust: catback rusted/rotted. downpipe/manifolds in decent shape
Turbo: Waste gate adjusted loose, boost solenoid clogged
Drivetrain: OE Replacement syty trans, modified prop shaft, ATR chrome diff cover
Suspension: Lowered 2 inches with off the shelf blocks, through bolts found bent upon removal, all 4 shocks bad, bottomed out everywhere
Steering: Sloppy, unresponsive, lots of play
Wheels/Tires: Good condition
Overall: great shape for 97K miles, obviously needs some work

With that being said, the main goel was to get the truck back to its original condition. Diversions from that goal included enhancing flawed OE designs like steering and prop shaft along the way. With that said, begin the restoration!

Why do your datamaster images have high rpm's and boost, but it shows zero for speed? Just curious.

Oh ok. I thought maybe there was some cool way to run datamaster without actually driving the truck anywhere.

What kind of foglights are those?

1 - Alarm Removed

1 - Alarm Removed

The inside of the truck was a mess of wires; half from the alarm, the other half from the stereo. The first mission was to remove the nest of wires, that was the alarm, underneath the dashboard. Had the alarm been installed neatly and correctly, I would have considered leaving it, however, this was not the case.

The next step was to patch up the wires that cut into the IGN KEY wires with those crappy T-Tap wire connectors. The cut up wires were patched with solder and taped.

You can see the mess of wires pulled out.

the foglights are from walmart, a Blazer knock off. I would have gotten the diamond whites but they werent instock and I didnt want to wait. It was cheaper to buy them at walmart then ebay after all was said and done, plus no wait time. I will have more pics of the lights coming soon.

2 - Radio Installation

2 - Radio Installation

The truck came with a nice pioneer head unit installed very poorly. I was diggin the stock set up anyway so I opted for a 95 CD player out of an astro van. I bought it from some guy here on the board but I forget who it was. Although it has its quirks, I am very happy with it. It even plays burned CDs!

This is the mess I had to deal with:

This is the new harness after i fixed it:

This is the finished product:

3 - KYB Gas-A-Just Shocks

3 - KYB Gas-A-Just Shocks

The shocks were completely gone when I got the truck. I bought the gas-a-just shocks thinking they were adjustable. If they are, I still do not know how to adjust them. I opted for the KYB Monomax's later on because the gas-a-djusts were not firm enough. The truck also came with cheap 2 inch drop blocks. I 86'd them when I installed the shocks. Unfortunatly I have no pictures of this install; I belive I forgot to bring the camera to the shop and it was too far to go back and get it. Just imagine an exciting day of swapping shocks, pulling factory u-bolts off a junkyard blazer in 100 degree florida heat, and almost dropping the rear end on the ground from a height of 6 feet. :D

4 - ATR cat back exhaust

4 - ATR cat back exhaust

This was necessary because the exhaust on the truck was horrible when I bought it. Some one welded a pipe in place of the muffler and all the pipe after the cat was rusted with holes in it. Lucky I got one of the last ATR made.

This is the swiss cheese exhaust:

This is the new exhaust about to be installed:

The rear mount had to be moved because ATR had the hanger in the wrong spot for my truck. These pics did not come out but I will get new ones as soon as I can.

5 - tune up, injectors, msd wires, sensors, vacuum lines

5 - tune up, injectors, msd wires, sensors, vacuum lines

At this point the truck was still running poor. As a new TY owner, I though I'd just cover all the bases and replace everything, save for a few important details I overlooked that will be covered in tune up 2. The trhottle body and upper intake plenum were also removed, cleaned and replaced.

First thing on the list was to order all new sensors. This was done through rock auto and or gm parts direct, I can't remember. MAP, O2, Engine Temp, Air Temp, and TPS were all replaced. Click below for the all the pics (sorry this gallery needs an update)

Next, the injectors were sent to Marren Fuel Injection for testing, cleaning, rebuilding and testing. A great thing to do in my opinion, well worth the $25 or so each. Pics only show injectors going in, so there are no "before" shots =/.

The truck came with MSD plug wires. Some of them were wrapped around the downpipe. I spent a good deal of time cleaning them, straightening them, and running them correctly. They are later changed to ATR Black Beauty plug wires run in the same fasion. Spark plugs were also changed at this point. Click below for all the pictures.

In the mean time, the haphazardly run vacuum lines were aproaching the chopping block. Before I thought of running silicone lines, I re-ran all the vacuum lines iwth rubber vac line from the auto parts store. They were later replaced with silicone lines.

6 - upper intercooler and battery tray

6 - upper intercooler and battery tray

There were several parts of the truck that did not look so hot when I got it. The worst were the upper intercooler and the battery tray. The paint was chipping off of the upper cooler, and the battery tray was severely rusted and pitted. They were sandblasted so I could paint them. I don't think there are any before shots here either =/

This is the intercooler getting painted and installed:

This is the same with the battery tray. The battery tray was in such bad shape that it was later swapped in favor of a better one. I was able to pick up one from a 10K mile syclone from a board member.

7 - Kenne Bell cold air intake

7 - Kenne Bell cold air intake

The truck came with a semi-complete Kenne Belle cold air intake that had seen better days. I wasn't a fan of this setup from the moment I saw it. At this point I was so new to syty's I had no idea what the factory setup even looked like. The installation of this intake was right on par with the installation of the radio. Unfortunatly I didn't have the recources to atain a factory unit yet, so I delt with it and made the best of it. Yet again, I do not have any before pictures. Just imagine the big orange hose crushing the turbo/intercooler hose because the AC line is crushing it. =/

Most of the time was spent re-creating the pcv system, because it was non-existant when I got the truck. I ran it in way that was not really noticable, but I am not sure how functional it was now that I look back on it. Here the pcv fittings are ready for paint.

Here the lines are run to the passenger side of the engine bay, almost ready for complete installation.

The final product, it didn't turn out too bad after all. I sold it a month later to a board member in favor of a stock setup from mrweelr.
