Typhoon Conversion

Hey dudes and dudets! Im new to this whole thing, but I have a offroading 1996 GMC Jimmy with lifts, tires, guards, the whole thing and I love my ride. However beastly and all as it is, it is slow as hell even with cold air intakes and stuff. I am asking for any help and advice that you experienced peoples can give me. First, is it possible to do a engine swap to a Jimmy with a Typhoon engine and if it is possible what other mods would I need to do to my ride to make it functional. Two, what are the downsides and problems you can see happening and be blunt if this is a downright horrible idea. Thanks all for your help, please look the idea + problem over from heads to tails.

Truckless. For now.
sure, anything is possible with enough $$$. but you'll need more than just the engine. you'll need the ecm, wiring harness, etc. problems? $$$ for one. also, these engines are super picky to maintain and keep in tune. they are prone to detonation.

i would suggest browsing the forums and using the search feature. this topic has been covered a multitude of times and the answers are out there. be patient, because they are on a new server, and it's being "picky" to say the least.

honestly, for your application, you would have much better luck with a v-8 swap and some gears. no turbo lag and still have good torque down low for off-roading.

edit: man jimmy, you're getting quick on that post! you have that thing on a notepad for copy and paste replies?

With what you are looking at it will be cheaper and more reliable to go with an LS1. Yu would be looking at the same kind of instalation, plus, the LS1 is more common to be found.

how high do you have your truck lifted?

Lift

Lift

I got a 3" Lift riding on 31"s. Working on more improvements this week. Just starting to research this engine topic.

The LS1 is definitely a better option for your application. You will be able to find an LS1 easier than a syty. If/when you go offroading it will give you a good amount of power without having to wait for boost to kick in. You wouldn't want boost to kick in and send you rocketing forward into a tree or a drop off.

LS1's can be found at ebay, or a company called Speartech. They sell custom LS1 packages for all sorts of applications. An LS1+4L60E Auto Trannsmission with custom programming and wire harness from them for $6000. And it has a warranty! 8)

what he said...i haven't seen an LS1 in a truck like ours, but i bet they exist...LS1's are cool IMO...

For off road apps I dunno if the LS1 is the best.

Off-road needs low RPM torque.

I think a mild 383 would be the ticket. You can get EVERYTHING you need to drop it in easily and much less headache than the LS1.

A well built 383 is a wonderful street/offroad engine with good manner and a very nice torque curve.

A turbocharged engine would be cool but just not as suited to the job.

I think a LS1 would be a nightmare to put in. The oil pan alone...I would use a reg style smallblock of your choice, carbed or fuel injected. You can get all of the parts (oil pan, motormounts, headers) Its a bolt in. If you use the LS1 you will need to fab headers,, mounts, fuel system (It uses a computer controlled fuel pump) and so on...................
Just my rambling $.02

Why don't you trade your Jimmy in and go buy a Typhoon instead of hacking one up?

Because then he would have to hack up the Ty to put a lift kit and monster tires on............

he's just looking for a sy/ty motor as a possibility i believe, with no intentions of hacking one up.

greensoccerjimmy, my bro has a 383 for sale, balanced & blueprinted, 5.7" rods. good motor with the torque you're looking for. $2000. let me know if you're interested.
