My friend has started to get more and more into photography and getting pretty good with her camera. We got talking and said she wanted to do a shoot with the Typhoon. She invited one of he awesome friends to come along for the day and do some modeling too. I wanted to share some of the photo's from the day.

Re: Typhoon photoshoot

Great pics! Nice Ty + pretty girl =

They remind me of some senior pics my friend took of her daughter using my '60 Bel Air.

Re: Typhoon photoshoot

photographically the pictures suck..

girl is blown out in most of them and the composition blows.

hell you don't even see the truck in any of the pics, but i guess put a pretty girl in a picture and it is considered good.

they all look like snapshots taken with a point and shoot camera..

My taste is all in my mouth, so I'll reserve comment except to agree with this. It is damn hard to get any definition with a black truck without everything else in the shot being overexposed. That's where darkroom (now Photoshop) magic comes in. The best photogs are as good with post-processing as they are with composition and camera.

Like I was saying, she is just starting and just learning so she is a beginner. How about some helpful tips with shooting or editing, different things to try, positioning, shutter speed, lighting. Any thing helpful I could pass along and maybe we'll go out there and give it another shot. Just saying the suck wont help with improvement.

Maybe some help from a couple of masters like you guys could make them amazing next time or with a little more practice.

I am the furthest thing from a master..

however, she needs to figure out lighting (natural light isn't the best), exposure (challenging with a black truck), and composition..

the ONLY picture that has anything good about it is the first one, and her elbow is cut off, there is no reason for her elbow to be cut off.

tips:
-control your subject, get the model to smile
-position the truck so that nothing is sticking out from behind it
-take more pics, you won't get better without practise
-try moving shots
-read books/ebooks/etc
-look at others pics and attempt to recreate them, you'll learn what it took to get it done and expand your knowledge.

your friend is going to go through a few stages, she will learn the most from the following:
-using fixed lenses or use a variable range lens at a constant distance (IE: 16-55, use it at 20mm and don't change it, force yourself to move to get the picture)
-using the "Manual" mode on her camera
-learn depth of field

photography takes alot of time to get good at, I hardly consider myself good.

Awesome, I'll pass that along, that is all good info.

One day when I stop wasting money on jetski's and parts I'll man up and buy a sick camera and getting into photography. But for now it's Kawasaki money pits.

Re: Typhoon photoshoot

I thought the B&W one that White97SVT posted is cool and could be really cool with a little editing. At first glance I though they looked ok but I can see some of what you are saying. Define "blown out". I'm not sure if I know what you're talking about. The reflection of that 4 door car in the door bothered me more than anything.

So....BigSmoosh.....I'm curious. Give me your opinion of the pics I posted.

blownout = over exposed, no detail.. as turbodog stated getting detail on a black truck is difficult and requires a longer exposure, which in turn "blowsout" the girl and any detail in her

as for the pics you posted, even though it was a professional that took them, they aren't that impressive.. there is too much post processing and vignetting (spelling)..

she also didn't use any depth of field and the trees in the background don't help the pictures. the first one the hood is blown out and because of it the large whitespot draws your eye to that and away from the subject (the girl)

the second one is ok, but the car is angled and not straight, the tree line in the back sucks..

car looks nice though and most importantly the girl looks happy, hopefully she was happy with the pictures.

*edit* joe, i looked at michelle's website... she could use alot of practise and has room for massive improvement.. considering i could take those pics and that she does WAY to much post processing i wouldn't hire her for anything.

Re: Typhoon photoshoot

WTF you could have sent an invite for more trucks.

new photographers aren't usually outgoing..

she will probably practise on her friends for awhile, then move on to the general public..

i'm going to guess it will be a year before she attempts to do weddings as a form of side income.. hopefully she doesn't ruin someone's wedding day :)

Re: Typhoon photoshoot

I can't stop looking at the big white spot on the hood now.

Michelle hasn't been doing photography for very long. She started by taking pics of friends for fun and it turned into more (She is actually an CPA). I think she is getting better but I really don't know what I'm doing. Thats why I asked.

Truckless. For now.
Re: Typhoon photoshoot

Another thing I would recommend is have her look at websites of professional photographers. Look at the photos they take and pay attention to the lighting and composition.

Here's a shameless plug for a buddy of mine: http://heacoxphotography.com/ Here's his Flickr stream: http://www.flickr.com/photos/spreadhead/

He's one of the best photographers I've seen. Pete just knows his camera and knows how to use it. He very rarely needs to do any post processing in Lightroom. If he needs a specific effect that just isn't possible with a camera, he might use Pphotoshop, but he stays away unless absolutely necessary.

All of Eric's comments were absolutely valid. Read. Study. Read. Study. And practice practice practice.

Re: Typhoon photoshoot

IMO- I dont see any vignetting (spelling) in her pics at all - unless I am completely mistaken that is when you add black around the photo to highlight the person/item in the photo - something ALMOST ALL pro's do. Photography is all about repitition and playing with different settings, poses, angles - thats how you learn! She did fine for someone just beginning!
