Typhoon turbo whine

I am considering purchasing a Ty with 75K miles. I drove a few Ty's about 4-5 years ago, and dont remember anything about them other than they are fast. I test drove one the other day, and it seemed odd that I couldnt hear the Turbo whine at all. Is this normal? The truck was very fast and pulled very hard, so it seems like it was working. Also the truck is pretty much all stock. How loud are the Turbo's in these cars? I have a Grand National, and the Turbo's are definately a lot more noticeable. thanks!!!

Re: Typhoon turbo whine

It depends on what is done to the truck. If it has just about any kind of cold air kit or stock air box delete then its going to be much louder. I have a 20g with straight exhaust and just a filter on the end of hte elbow turned to the side and you can hear my turbo from the stands as it goes by at the track.

Re: Typhoon turbo whine

Thanks for the info. I believe the truck is all stock. I couldnt hear the turbo whine at all. The turbo was definately working. Is it normal for the turbos to be so quite on these trucks? thanks again

Re: Typhoon turbo whine

yes it is normal for them to be so quiet. As soon as you take off the stock crossover and airbox and go with a smaller filter on the turbo, the noise will get much louder.

sorry to sound like a rookie, but i see in your signatures- code$59......could you kindly explain to me what that is?.

thanks

$58 is stock computer interface (ecm)
$59 is more versatile form of this interface that allows more control for tuning and some other cool stuff. if youre still confused try searching this forum or check out code59.org

Are you running a muffler or CAT? I just removed my CAT but left the muffler and am thinking of removing the muffler also but I don't want to have any boost issues. I also am running a 20g14cm. Thanks.

put the CAT back on and leave the muffler then weld up an exhaust cut out.. open it when you want all the noise and extra few pounds of boost.. close it when the police are near :)

Re: Typhoon turbo whine

They are quiet stock. I took my friend for a ride in my SY and I was like , listen to the turbo ... hes like "uhh I cant hear it". I hear it probably because I know what to listen for, but if the radio is on... its like its not even there :) ---

Got it! Thanks. Why leave the cat on? It sounds throaty now without it and keeping the muffler.

Re: Typhoon turbo whine

If you leave the cat on it REALLY helps with boost spikes (the little bit of backpressure is needed for daily driving I think ) ---
