TYPHOONS are so RARE....

Re: TYPHOONS are so RARE....

I told the guy behind the counter at the welding supply store (who had just told me his buick GN had so much power it would break windshields while pulling the wheels in the air on the street) that my syclone had the optional buick gnx engine installed in it from the factory with the straightest face I could do, Jeremy was with me on that trip and went along with the story. We had a good laugh afterwards, I suspect he is still changing windshields.

Don't know if any of you have seen this video, but even Car and Driver doesn't always know whats up . Watch 3:35 on and you will see what I'm talking about. Sorry if this video is a repost

It just show you that, Even if you are in the car magazine business as Editor in Chief, you can still be clueless. I am surprise that the proof reading department didn't catch it. Maybe they did, but hated their boss so they let it go through :rotf:.

I've had people comment on my body kit and then ask me "That's a pretty good name you came up with...you call your blazer 'Typhoon'"

Re: TYPHOONS are so RARE....

I've had a few friends that knew what a Typhoon was and so when I told them I got one they were excited. There were a few older guys at work that remember them and so I spent about a good hour or so in the parking lot talking to different people when I took it to work for the first time. I haven't had a random person say anything yet, but it is a "smaller" town I guess

That is SWEEEET brotha. What color/s are they!?

I had two of the same cars, at the same time... TWICE. I owned 5 cars. One '96 Grand Am with air ride. Two '92 Grand Prix coupes (both with the "Aero Package" aka B4U option...similar to the Turbo Grand Prix bodystyle) AND two Grand Am GT coupes, BOTH with the High Output Quad 4 engines. (white '94 and teal '92). My friends though I was crazy too. It's like- I had my "DAILY" driver Grand Prix.. my old "H.O." Grand Am- for OWNING Jap cars, my other Grand Prix...just for cruising..? and my MINT (seriously gotta be the LAST one) '94 GA GT coupe... lol

Thanks! Both of my Typhoons are '93 black/black. I've owned one for 9 years and the other for 3. That's a nice list you have there! I'm a Poncho fan too: Owned '93,'92 &'87 2-door Grand Ams. The Aero GP is pretty cool, and remember The Richard Petty Editions? I've always wanted one the '89 Turbo T/A's and '89-90' McLaren Turbo GP's. Maybe someday.

I especially like the comment from the guy who's previously owned 2 1987 GN's and 2 1991 Typhoons. Dennis will be disappointed to learn his truck isn't so unusual after all.

Re: TYPHOONS are so RARE....

You get used to it after awhile. I typically try to just go along with the person or start going into left field on what the truck really is.

The only time that offended me was sitting in traffic when I had the Royal.... ricer kid pulls up next to me in his Integra and his GF in the pass seat. He leans over and tells me I have a beautiful Typhoon.....then asks, is it real? Now com'n.... dont tell me how nice my truck is, then slap me down and ask if the damn thing is real. I asked why he would think its fake and his GF sneered at me that he was only trying to give me a compliment. WTF? Asking me if my truck is real is not a compliment in my book. He went on to school me that they didnt make any Typhoons in blue  I looked forward and rolled up the window.....

GF was ugly too.

I've had people do the same to me, asking if it's the real deal. Some of the kids that ask know them from the youtube videos...
I like messing w/ them and tell 'em it's just a clone w/ a regular six..lol..

Re: TYPHOONS are so RARE....

I feel your pain, I as well own a small dealership in denver, and I ALWAYS get the "how much for the blazer" question. I tell em the same as you, been tellin them they can have it for 15k cash since i was 15. Back in the day I used to drive it to my dads dealership (before I had my own) and got the same response. Welcome to the club, infact i have been mistakened for a hispanic many times, been told its a "beaner truck," so I put a decal on the back written in arabic "mashallah" which means gods wish, that took care of the hispanic crowd. Last I had my Ty out, I had a guy stop me to ask if it had a diesel cause its open exhaust

p.s.- what part of NE are you in, I do alot of hunting in Kearny, (the basin) and O'neil

Re: TYPHOONS are so RARE....

Back to the same thing..

I had been hiding my TY for the first week after I got it home but some how most of my friends already knew about it... It had been sitting in my shop for 99% of the time for a while. ,, As soon as I attended a friends whrenching party ( thats when we get together at a friends garage and watch him werench while we drink ) I was asked by a few of them,,, Is that white TYphoon at your lot yours? I was like "What? When did you see it" He said he saw it parked in front of one of the shop doors... After thinking a while, I remember that I only pulled it out for like half an hour to clean the floors....

My friends now know that I own it and they call it a "BLAZER" just cuz they know I dont like it LOL But one of em started calling it "phoonTY" I can only guess that they had to do some research and ended up here....

The same day I got the TY home I droped off the Uhaul at the shop and drove to the Kum & Go which is next door and had to fuel up the TY. While paying for my fuel i met a old friend of mine there and we made small chat.. He had asked me why I looked so tired? "Did you go to the auctions?" I said "Nah, I just got back from Colorado" he asked why and I told him that I had to pick up a vehice. He asked what it was so I pointed out towards the fuel pumps... He turned arround and looked back at me and with the biggest grin on his face said " YOU GOT A TORNADO?" " DUDE! How much do you want for that one?" I told him that it wasnt for sale... He just turned arround and walked out to take a closer look... HAHAH He knew it was something special, he just didnt know the correct name but he was close... LOL

Re: TYPHOONS are so RARE....

When I had front diff problems, I stopped into a local Chevy dealer to see how much it would cost to just buy the whole assembly from the dealer (if it was even available). I told him what happened, what I wanted, and that it was for a '91 GMC Syclone. "So... That's a... truck... or something?"

P.S. This is one more reason why you're no better off taking your SyTy to a dealership.

Re: TYPHOONS are so RARE....

The first car show I went to with my TY, I had a guy insist it had a 3.8 supercharged under the hood. I told him no, its a 4.3 turbo....He wouldnt drop the 3.8 thing. So, I popped the hood. Once he saw the "4.3 turbo" on top of the engine, he accused me of swapping it out! He than further started insulting me. He told me I bought it in Brampton (which is about 45 min. from where I live.) Meanwhile I bought the truck in Lenexa KS. 1100 mi. away. this jack a$$ than told me the truck used to belong to his brothers friend, and his brother helped put the body kit on it, and he...he himself built the leather seating for the truck, but than asked why I would swap out the"very powerful, and very dependable 3.8 he had helped install?" I closed the hood, pointed away from the truck, and told him to F..OFF.. with his insults. Than told him to Google it before he opens his mouth again! On the same token I was stopped last summer by a young guy, he must have been 16-17 years old. He was so breath taken by seeing a Typhoon... He asked me to pull over to look over my truck. Im sure his enthusiasm, and memory of my truck will last him a very long time.

Re: TYPHOONS are so RARE....

I accidently snapped a vacumme check valve and went to a GMC stealership.
Noone had any clue what it was. And it took the guy 25 minutes to find a part number.

A second time around i took my truck to a different GMC dealership and within 5 minutes i had 3 of the salesmen bidding on the truck. The sales manager came out and told me theres no way in hell i was leaving the lot with the Ty :D

I think my best warm and fuzzy story was about 2 weeks after i got it. I was stopped at a red light across from a crappy ass mechanic place and i hear, "OH SHIT TYPHOON, You guys gotta come out here"
*insert shit eating grin* As every guy who worked in the place stumbled out to see the truck the light snapped from red to gree and i left with a little boost launch.

I went and looked at your future Ty back in March of 2006 at KC Classic Auto. At that point in time it was about 10 cars deep into the warehouse sitting behind a '69 El Camino. It looked nice.

Thanks! I was about a block from KC stopped at a red light, when another black and argent came to the lights crossing pathes infront of me! We just looked at each other like "what the f***k? another Ty!" His was a '93 aswell. The drive home was a very memorable one, I did get alot of thumbs up, even from a stae trooper, who followed me for 2mi, eventually taking about 3min. to pass me!

Re: TYPHOONS are so RARE....

Awesome stories. This is part of the reason I want a Typhoon. Most of my cars have been rare in one way or another. I love the odd looks and funny questions.

Re: TYPHOONS are so RARE....

My wife and I have been looking for a new suv for her. We pull in and look at an 08 Tahoe, the first thing the car rip off artist...oh, I mean car salesman says is "i'll give you 11G for your typhoon" and make the tahoe only XXXX.XX I look a them and I pull a dime out of my pocket, hand it to them and say.....your tahoe is a dime a dozen! No thanks, guess your not intersted in sellng a car. It's so nice to be in a buyers market right now! Car sales persons are such arseholes!

I must say, it is very cool to pull and have people look at you as if your driving a car with a nude woman on the hood.
