unhappy typhoon

Re: unhappy typhoon

Well had my blonde moment of the day. Don't measure the grey wire and the purple wire, the purple wire appears to be the sending unit for the gas gauge. With the grey wire to ground I have 12-13.3vdc. I hung my fuel gauge out of my hood and took the truck for a ride. Towels strategically placed not to scratch the new paint and my neighbors laughing at my redneck self. I also used my fuel gauge from my tbird sc since I know it's accurate. 34-35psi at Idle, once in gear it came up to around 40 but jumped from 37-40 when it stumbled. Took it for a ride and fuel pressure came up while my rpms came up. Still the truck kept stumbling and the gauge would go down 3psi then come back up. The miss is pretty strong so I came back to the house quick not to make other issues. I really don't feel the issue is fuel related, I just wanted to eliminate it.

Now I did unplug one wire from my cap and rotor at a time today to see how the truck reacted. I never did see a huge difference In the way the truck ran. Every sign to me points to an ignition issue now and the only thing i have not looked into is the ICM. I am throwing straws at this point.
It's really a shame because it is a perfect day in Maryland, I would love to go for ride. Always next weekend!!!

Well if your fuel pressure is in gear or boost 40 psi you found your
problem it should be at least in the 50 to 60 psi when in gear or
engine load and not 37-40 psi that is way to low !!!!!!!!!

Are you sure the vacuum line is connected to the fuel pressure
regulator this will increase your fuel rail pressure !!!

Re: unhappy typhoon

Vacuum line was still connected to the regulator. I Never saw fuel pressure above 45psi at all. I do appreciate the quick response. I will take the truck for one last drive tomorrow and verify this. In my manual I have not seen what my fuel pressure should be in gear. So once in gear I should be reading 50-60psi. Thank you!!,
Btw, I wish I had a syclone to take the bed off for the fuel pump, the typhoon seems like a fun project.

Re: unhappy typhoon

dave,
thanks for the help. and you are right, i dont know this truck very well. i have owned this truck for seven years and six of them were taking the body off the frame and soda blasting almost everything and starting over. the truck had lots of rust, and one thing led to another, before i knew it 5 years of sitting on jack stands had passed. the truck is absolutely beautiful now. now i just need to figure the damn thing out.

as far as the stumble, it feels like a dead miss. this is only felt when put into gear, or when ac is engaged. it is much more pronounced when driving. had a friend stop over and we went through the truck. during this he put a ground lead on the negative battery attached was a sharp probe, and he stuck it through the top of all the plug boots one at a time on my cap/rotor(i have installed new wires since). He said it looked like my number 4 cylinder had the miss, so we pulled the plug out and he said it looked dry. he then put some tool in between my spark plug and wire to verify it was firing which it was. his guess was that i had a bad injector on my number 4 cylinder and he couldnt access easily to test it because of the intercooler. i ordered a new injector and installed it with the same result.

after that, i know these truck take some getting used to, i opened my manual and started reading. since then i have checked the following again, plugs for correct gap and wear, pulled cap and rotor to make sure there was no fouling and i thought i had checked the fuel system pretty well. checked tps voltages, map sensor voltage with and without vacuum, egr open and closed, and o2 hooked up and not hooked up. i cant get my fuel pressure above 45psi since i cant bring the truck up on boost.

i am going to order an aldl cable and datamaster tomorrow so i can properly learn this truck. hook up the computer and hope it point me in the right direction. sooner or later i needed to get to this step

Re: unhappy typhoon

dave,
a little more on the miss, it is a constant. it is not intermittent, but always there when driving. you can feel the truck buck while going down the street.
i will check my plug wires for resistance tomorrow

Re: unhappy typhoon

Have you done a leak down or compression check, what is done to the motor how many miles, any strange noises?

Re: unhappy typhoon

Truck is finally running correctly. Big Mike, its a 93 typhoon, bone stock for now(truck 0222) 68,500miles

Today did compression test of cylinders and all checked out great. Decided to put new ICM on and see what happens. When i pulled the cap and rotor noticed a good amount of rust inside of the distributor. Put new ICM on and still ran poorly. I decided to pull the distributor out and inspect better. with good light, i could see it was corroded heavily, so i removed the shaft of the distributor and cleaned all the connection points with sand paper, emory clothe and electronic spray. Once the distributor was clean and pretty again, i reinstalled and lined up to existing marks i had to get the timing at least close for first turn on. Fired up the truck and it seemed normal, backed out of garage and ran it down the street with a smile on my face for the first time in a while, no miss. Tomorrow I need to set the timing perfect, but for today it ran real nice with my existing marks for timing i made. i can finally sleep. btw, autozone took the new icm back, so dont listen when they say they dont take back electronic parts.

thank you to everyone for your input, looks like if your truck sits for 5+ years, check and make sure your dont have any corrosion on your distributor.

Re: unhappy typhoon

hey man, im not mad at you.
i have had a thunderbird supercoupe for the past 17 years, its my baby, i can change head gaskets in 2 hours. its very humbling for me to ask for help, but i appreciate anyone who lets me bounce my ideas and work off to them. i have found sometimes your mind gets you thinking one thing, and you miss the obvious. thanks again

oh yeah, where is my datamaster/aldl cable and check book. time to finally have some fun.
