upgrade turbo

I was wondering what a decent turbo upgrade would be for a stock motor. I currently have a Garrett turbo and the inlet blades look like they might have touched off or something went through them somewhere in the past. It still spools but efficiency is definetly down. I want something I can run on the stock motor and raise boost when I do a rebuild. I was looking at this turbo but wanted some feedback.

Re: upgrade turbo

I have been wondering the same thing. My turbo is getting old.. I think the fins are tattered.. Been wondering what aftermarket turbo would be a good choice for a replacement that I wont have to do all kinds of custom crap?? Direct bolt on.

Re: upgrade turbo

You can get an upgraded stocker for i think half that price ($5-600 I think). You could also raise boost on a stock turbo up to 22psi efficiently, and it plays well with stock equip like TC, under hood clearances, and the rest of the stock systems.. Check out the "waller performance" forum. I'm pretty sure most are really happy with this upgrade.

I'm running RPM's stage1 (turbonetics 50mm, 450ppm, 3inch inlet) and me likey. I'd recommend you talk to some of the syty vendors and tell them how fast you wanna go if buying aftermarket. They've got the most experience out there and are WAAAY helpful, all of them.

Re: upgrade turbo

No other mods just bolt & go. 20G is the way to go. = to like A 40mm. turbo. so it is A good upgrade from stock & just bolts right up.

Re: upgrade turbo

Thanks for the reply guys! So which 20G, the one I described in the first post or is there one that's recommended? I'll also research the other turbos that I got replies on.

Re: upgrade turbo

i went a 60-1 from rpm and it was a good turbo and had good spool time. you will need to either restall you converter or get another one becasue the stock stall is too low even for a 20g with a 14cm housing. you can get the samller housing and it will be better with the stock stall but will still have a little lag to it but they are hard to find.

I'll check it out, I already have a 3000 stall.

Re: upgrade turbo

I know that I dont want to change my TC... I just want something that will replace my stock turbo.

Other than the time frame I am doing the waller upgrade but I was in no hurry from the get go. I will hopefully have some documented stuff when it is done as far as imporvement. but he claims to be very quick spool and not converter swap needed:tup:

Re: upgrade turbo

The GT35R is the better choice. The 25g is half the price and will make the same power. The 25g has a 12cm housing and that should be spoolable on the stock converter. The housing on the GT35R is probably bigger. That may mean bigger converter even though it is ball bearing. Not really sure how the 35r reacts to the stock converter. You might also have to ditch the AC bracket to run the 35r. There is another $100 on a new tensioner pulley setup. The 25g fits. Your only going to be able to hold so much boost on the line anyway. The 25g might take a second longer to build boost on the line. I’m a married guy and have a wife that is really tight with money. So budget performance is what I strive for. Not always the best route.
