upper IC overflow nozzle broke off

i still have the piece but is this thing even necessary? I've always had a little black cap over the end of it and never even used an actual overflow hose. I can't be the only one who's broken this thing off. Is it vital to try to reattach this thing or can I get away with throwing a dab of JB weld in there to fill the hole and call it a day?

Any welding shop worth a **** can fix it for cheap.Just bring them the IC and the piece.

Mine's broken too. But not completely. Yet. Just a small nub there. QuickstopUK knows all about small nubs. I just zip tied mine onto what was left.

wouldn't that eff up the awesome ceramic coating on the IC?

I have been wondering about this. Can you ceramic coat the outside of the IC? If you have done it do you have any pics? I asked the coating guy i used about it and he said he baked the parts at 400* F, and i didnt want to risk melting the core.

Pretty sure he was being sarcastic when he called the rattle can paint "ceramic coating"

I'm gonna go get a wooden dowel and try to ****** rig this thing on here first. What's the worst that would happen if i sealed up the hole? If the pressure got too high coolant would just leak out of the cap on the IC, or blow the dab of jb weld out of the IC like a bullet and put a hole in my KB CAI.

Probably nothing but the engineers/designers put it there for a reason. :dunno:

My thinking was that the heat from the DP and turbo wouldnt heat soak it as bad. Same idea for replacing the metal lines around the motor. Less heat from outside the air path. The water inside is what is cooling the charge, not the engine air outside the IC.

I would really like to have it done, but scared to melt the core.

Mine cracked off as well... JB weld has been holding for 4 years now.

Plug it off, if it gets that hot that it pushes out past the cap you have other things to worry about

i bought ty with it zip tied.

ive put a small hose clamp on very tight. it barley holds, but it does. and thats with reservoir re-routed around to the other side of the truck. so my hose is almost 6ft long, but it works!

i say if you dont want it, forget it. its not meant to be a res/recovery like coolant. its only overflow. so if you are ok with the cap spraying, then screw it. DO IT!

hmmm... not too sure on that one... I would think that if you ceramic coated the IC, once you did a run down the track and the IC got heat soaked to hell that the ceramic would retain the heat and make it take longer to cool down... internally I mean, not from the ambient hot air from the turbo... i could be wrong, but isn't the whole point of ceramic coating exhaust and turbos to help retain the heat in those areas? I don't know that it do anything beneficial in the way of protecting from heat... might look cool though, but at that point it would probably be cheaper to just powder coat it.

Drill it out and tap it for a 1/8 npt plug or for a 1/8 npt hose barb. Drill and tap is easy and reversible.

Ask TNPhoon about plugs. He knows all about them.

It's an insulator. It inhibits the transfer of heat, not "retains" it specifically. Coating the CAC would indeed keep the heat from the charge air from radiating out of the CAC, but also at the same time keep the heat from the turbo/downpipe/etc. from radiating into the CAC. I'm willing to guess that the rest of the engine bay puts more heat into the CAC than the CAC radiates out. The IC system is designed so that the water transfers the heat from the CAC down to the CCHE, which then transfers the heat out to the air (just like any radiator).

By insulating the CAC (with wrap, ceramic coating, or whatever), you're just isolating it from the rest of the engine bay. Heat outside the CAC should stay out, and heat inside it will stay in it.

makes total sense! hmmm so maybe just ceramic coat the bottom and the left side to protect from the turbo, and leave the rest uncoated... it'll look dumb but you might get the best of both there hahaha.

Personally, I'd just do the whole thing, if you were going to do it. Keep in mind that the ambient air needs to be cooler than the CAC for it to dump out any extra heat. Is the air between the CAC and the hood/intake area really that much cooler than the CAC itself? If the ambient air is any warmer than the CAC, it'll actually be adding a small amount of heat to the IC system. Like I said before, the CAC is designed to transfer heat from the intake air to the water. The CCHE's job is to dump the heat out of the water to the atmosphere. Any heat that happens to radiate out of the CAC is just an extra bonus - it's like the heat that radiates out of your engine block vs. the heat that's dumped out via the radiator (but on a much smaller scale).

I can't be the only one who remembers back in the day when people wrapped their CACs in "turbo blanket" material and heat-reflective tape.

Ditto, go for the ultra smooth "shaved" look ! I have had mine capped off for almost as long as I have owned my truck. The IC can take some heat, I had to get mined welded up after I hand sanded through the welds when I polished it .

Obviously, the core was in place when it was made by Garrett. However given its' age, it probably wouldn't hold up as well to the high heat as when it was made over two decades ago...
