Upper IC quiz

Am I the only one who has ever had his upper IC leak? Seems like a rare if ever occurrence.

Also has anyone ever cut one apart to see what's int there? I'm thinking about it.

Thanks.

Don, happy birthday!!

What type coolant you run? You think something corroide out?

Interesting, I've seen very few that don't leak internally. Fwiw, taking it apart will net you nothing. It's just a core surrounded by aluminum plates and tube. I took one apart thinking I was going to figure out how to fix it but I just made a bid mess for no reason.

Re: Upper IC quiz

Thanks for the birthday wish. Chugging along in my 70's sometimes wondering how the heck I got this far. There are a few times in the past where I was very lucky. Makes one wonder.

First coolant. I ran antifreeze for a long time. Light mix, maybe 2/3 water. The I went over to a coolant additive called NAPA Cool. Supposed to be corrosion inhibitor.

Mike, you've seen very few that didn't leak? Really? Water into the intake? With my new-to-me used upper I am not loosing any water where before I would loose water and always thought I just wasn't getting all the air out.

I have no way to prove this but I actually think this thing has been leaking for awhile. I can tell you that the motor runs better without water injection...:rotf:

But thanks. I think I'll save my time.

same issues with my upper intercooler i have taken it off a few times over the years but this time i did notice it leaking not sure how rare of a problem always used straight antifreeze

Re: Upper IC quiz

A few years back, I disassembled a front heat exchanger. Sand blasted the metal housing removed the small exchanger core from within and ended up pumping/burping it into a bucket. I made one end of the hose clamp on the small barb and the other one empty into the bucket.

When I pumped it there was so much sediment and corrosion that was actually sitting on the bottom of the smaller core it was unreal. Flakes of stuff, deposits, im not exactly sure what it all was but my guess is a combination of minerals/deposits and corrosion due to the coolant.

Alum. Corrodes as steel rusts.

I really think a tube of part of the "tube and fin" gave out. Did you do any pressure tests? I cant recall if you did. Some how pressureize it and listen.

Also, I pumped a few factory garret intercoolers and same thing, sediment. You could have had a blockage and the tube ruptured/burst.

Re: Upper IC quiz

This whole thing was weird. I had noticed I was loosing water a couple of weeks ago. I don't drive it much except to the track. Anyway, truck is sitting in the garage and I top of the IC. Turn on the key, pump runs, all seems normal. Check it the next morning and it's low as in almost empty. Nothing on the floor so I take it off and it's wet on the TB side. Take the thing down to a rad shop and have him test the water side. He puts 20 psi in it and says it doesn't leak. I rig up a way to test the air side. Nothing come out the water side. I'm confused as usual.

Meantime I buy a used one from a member. It arrives so I just install it not wanting to fool with mine anymore. Holds water just fine. When I run the pump and look in there the flow looks much smoother for lack of a better word. (When I looked in my old one the flow was very turbulent.)

Off to the track I go and the truck is running really nice. ZERO spark retard. "Normal" is random retard on each run. Sometimes a little sometimes a spike. Boost is flat line also. The darn thing just plain runs better. Even on the street.

Sounds crazy but that's the story. I think it's been leaking a little for a long time. I just always thought I wasn't getting all the air out. Never occurred to me it might be going into the motor. Very irritating to think I've tried and tried to make the truck consistent and it was the damn cooler.

Re: Upper IC quiz

Ive got a spare IC acquired from one of the previous trucks Ive owned that has a label on it "leaks". Ive never taken the time to fill it up and see if it truly does leak.

Re: Upper IC quiz

The original upper IC on my Typhoon leaked so bad that I thought I had blown a head gasket. Tons of white smoke and crappy performance, obviously.

Thinking that it was a fluke, I picked up another stock upper from a member here and it too failed after a couple years

I'm currently on IC #3 and it seems to be holding up well enough, but it doesn't see as many miles as the previous units. I cant really blame it on the water around here since I use distilled water and antifreeze 60/40.

I was hoping my bad luck with the upper ICs was isolated to me, but I guess others get a turn too! ;)

Re: Upper IC quiz

Here's a dumb question: if it leaks under vacuum, does it leak under boost? Are you losing boost to the 11 or 15 lbs rad cap on the I/C?

The only dumb question is the one not asked. Nope on the rad cap. It's plumbed to the header tank and I was not gaining any water there.

Not loosing boost. (I think the waste gate would just close a bit.) It won't leak under vac because the only vac we have is on the manifold side. The upper IC only sees boost. Unless, I suppose, there is something wrong somewhere. Like a froze turbo or a totally clogged air cleaner.

Like I said, I think it's been leaking a little for a long time. Only recently did I notice that I was loosing water without going anywhere and nothing on the floor.

Also, since installing my new/used upper IC I have lost absolutely zero water from the system.

i didn't know about it until i checked the TB and found dried green coolant

I have one I cut apart a few year back. I will see if I still have it when I get home and post a few pics if I do.
