Upper intake manifold color code?

Re: Upper intake manifold color code?

Mine was painted, I thought it was original. It sat so tight I couldn't get all off with soda blasting. Only the machined surfaces were on bare aluminium. Same color is in the intercooler housing. The lower intake manifold is on bare aluminium and has much lighter color.

Here you can see the paint starting to peel off from the top: https://1drv.ms/i/s!As3kEwL1Af_XgvlWR4j2z7bRhkzLZg

It is not bare aluminum. It is powder coated, then machined afterwards. Like the wheels are. I have no idea what the color is. I painted one with BYB which is the Ty cladding color, then clear-coated it. I thought it was bare too, until I spent 4 hours in front of my blast cabinet removing the powder coat. That stuff is tough. It looked really good, and lasted fine up to the time I sold it 9 years later.

Definitely some kind of cast aluminum colored coating. I use loctite 7200 gasket remover, put it in a plastic bag, and media blast whatever is left. I powder coated my old typhoon ones in "chrome"

Re: Upper intake manifold color code?

When I worked at the Navy Yard I saw in the Navy valve shop as they would refinish valves from the ships. The valve bodies were blasted and then Thermal Sprayed with aluminum. Basically it was an aluminum wire fed into a gun that had a plasma arc that melted the aluminum wire and sprayed it on the body of the valve to protect from corrosion and it gave it a good look too.

This looked identical to our upper intakes and the upper ic coating and I always thought that was how it was done. That would explain why it is so tuff to get off with blasting it is actually a layer of aluminum sprayed on. There is a link in the words "Thermal Sprayed" above that you can click that explains the process.
