Use a fuel injector cleaning service or DIY???

I have been getting irritated at the price of what people want to clean and replce the pintle caps on injectors. Companies want on the low end $15 per injector to clean test and replace the caps, filters and o- rings (which costs less than $1.00 per injector). I have like 50 injectors that I want done... At 15 each for the 50 that is over $750.. Ouch...

So I am building my own...

Got the Harbor Freight 2.5 liter Ultrasonic Cleaner for Father's Day

Built 2 Dino fab fuel injector tester's (I hope they will run 3 injectors each - Crossing fingers)

Bought 6 graduated cylinders

Have lots of left over fuel line from my 66 Mustang fuel injection conversion - so thats covered...

Ran to the j-yard for an external fuel pump from a f-150 (has the bracket and everything) clipped a few barb fitting lines as well.

Next steps are getting a billet fuel rail (Anyone have one?) and building a case to hold the graduated cylinders, injectors and fuel rail and hooking it up!

It is nearly complete and I just wondered if anyone else had done something similar.

You gonna offer this as a service also? Just add it to the list man! I'm down.

I have used Witch Hunter Performance in the past. They do an initial test, then rebuild them, after the rebuild they have a way to "flow match" them. When the injectors return to you, you get a "dyno" sheet recording all the flow numbers from start to finish. This is something that may be difficult to do with a home rebuild of injectors. I am betting that some of the other injector rebuilders do the same, and you are paying more for that service than the actual rebuild.

I have read over and over that injectors dont really go bad they just get dirty. I bet that the inital test it to test the resistance with a meter. If it is right then they throw them on the bench and see what they flow.
With the little dino fab box I built it will run for 5 seconds at a time into the graduated cylinders. Then multiply the amount by 12 and I will get the full cc per minute flow rate and then I can convert that back to lb per hour. If I modify the tester I could get them to run for 15 seconds (or press the button 3 times) and then I would only have to multiply by 4 to get the flow rates (CC per min) and even create a dyno sheet based on that.

I dont know yet about offering it as a service, I need to see how long it takes. I may but I wanted to be able to easily test mine or some pulled from the junkyard first.

Yup - it'll cost about $15 per injector! :rotf:

Heck why not $20 Now that's some killer profit on a device that costs less than $250

I'd be in the green after 4 sets!!!!

If i can actally run and clean 6 at a time that would be awesome!

If it goes as easy as I think it will I would think that I could do a set of 6 for $50. I just wouldn't blast them I would be afraid of contaminating them...

Re: Use a fuel injector cleaning service or DIY???

I pay about $5 per injector locally, but that's only when a buddy of mine is in the shop working (mobile mechanic for a larger outfit). :D

Most injector cleaning services will offer the following at a minimum:

3-step ultrasonic cleaning
Replace o-rings, filters, and seals
6-point coil test
Leak test to 100psi
RPM ramp test (0-10,000rpm)
Pulse-width ramp test (0.5-20ms)
Spray pattern analysis
Static flow test
Dynamic flow test
ID etching
Lubricate and Bag

Dynamic flow matching is a big thing as (unless we're talking stock injectors) your injector will likely not be static under operating conditions. Would be easy enough to duplicate for your purposes (esp. if considering offering a service) by measuring PW timing (based on cc/1000 pulses).

DC = (PW/PI)*100

So, let's say assume 50% DC with a 15msec PI:

50 = (PW/15)*100
.5 = PW/15
.5*15 = PW
PW = 7.5msec

I prefer dynamic numbers as static numbers can be erratic (due to extremely low PIs).

I was just curious. I bought some used injectors for cheap, but wouldn't mind having them cleaned up before they go in.

Mike,

I have a set of 33lb stock injectors and wanted to get them serviced, can I send them to yoru friend? If so can you send me the contact info? If no do you recommend cleaning them yourself?

Hmm I have one of those ultrasonics.

What would you use to clean the injectors? I use 50/50 simple green and water usually for normal cleaning of things.
