viscous coupler conficting test results

Ok my typhoon has a bad viscous coupler. I realized this after I got it. When making sharp turns the front end binds and clunks. So I looked around for a junk yard TC and had no luck. Then I came across a 93 bravada for 400 on craigslist.

It was raining when I went to pick up the bravada so I just drove it around the parking lot making a bunch of sharp turns and it did not make any clicks, clunks, or binding sounds. So I got the truck back home and the next day attempted to do the test when you jack up the back of the truck and attempt to idle. Has anyone actually tried this test with one of our transfer cases, because I am confused as to how I can make sharp turns going forward and in reverse with no issues but as soon as I let my foot off the brake during the jack test the front wheels start pulling, hardly any spin at all from the back wheels.

I guess my main question is can the VC be locked but not cause any symptoms during hard turns? Or does the fact that I don't have any problems during tight turns mean the VC is good

Thanks

the parking lot test is the only one I use and know about.

Did you try this test with your Ty ?

Re: viscous coupler conficting test results

start from a dead start go slow turn all the way left and see if it binds, you will know

Ya, it's got a Turbo
Re: viscous coupler conficting test results

In my opinion (and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) a little "stiffness" when making a sharp parking lot type turn is normal for an AWD vehicle. Something has to slip since all 4 wheels are not turning at the same RPM. Because it is a viscous "clutch" it's designed to slip under these conditions.

Now, if things are clunking, then I'd have a close look at your driveline or steering/suspension components. Is the clunking coming from up front or mid chassis?

I launched mine and it just blows the back tires away and doesnt go until the rears grab, no power to the front at all.

Sure sounds like your V/C is gone. Or something in your x-fer case has grenaded.

A bad planetary will cause our trucks to be fwd. I found this out when Pat and I went to dyno my truck.
