vortec covers

I just bought a pair of vortec heads for my syty engine ibought from a member. The heads are casting 12557113 and came out of a 2002 jimmy. There is a steel bar running across the under side of the rockers. What is this bar for?
As well, do these heads need to be rebuilt to work with a syty engine? Or are they a straight bolt on? I know I need to retap the heads and modify the lower intake. One more thing....do the valve cover have gaskets that go betwen them and the head when they are bolted up ?
thanks,
jim

Re: vortec covers

the bar under the rockers is a pedistal to add strength bc that system uses a small std. you dont need to rebuild them just to put them on a syty but you will need to drill the heads for our intake bolt pattern. the valve covers do have a small rubber gasket that pushed into the cover that seals them.

Re: vortec covers

Hey John,
so they are a straight bolt on except for re tapping? Right? These have only about 12000 miles on them. I won't have issues with pushrod lengths? As well, is the gasket for the valve covers easy to get? If I do decide to rebuild them...what kit do you recommend?
thanks,
jim

Yes, Vortecs will bolt directly onto your block and everything but the intake manifold bolts up without modification.

Pushrod length should be the same, and the gaskets can be had from ANY parts store. Most people rebuild with Comp Cams stuff.
