Vortech or not....

I am at the stage with the wifes ty that i am looking to replace or repair the motor that is in it.I found a fresh rebuilt Vortech motor out of 96 s10 zero miles on it. Heads had a fresh valve job and minor porting, new rings, bearings chain, lifters ,cam etc.Rebuilt totaly to stock.Buddy of mine needs the money so told me 750 bucks.I was thinking of picking it up,i know the stock intake needs to be modified to work on it, But what else needs to be done, will exhaust manifolds, distributor etc work of the ty,or do i need more is my question?I know vortech is more compression, better head, has balance shaft, but what are the bads to swapping it in and modding intake to work.Is there more I need to make this work or not? I tried searching thru vortech stuff on here found lots on the head but not much on motor swap. This is by no means a race ty,its more of a fun driver with the ocassional stop light launch.Motor in it now is complete stock, stock boost etc.

So is it worth my time or should i rebuild the stocker, for less headache?

Re: Vortech or not....

i would redo the stocker, plus better for resale i think

don't plan on selling it,I would keep stock motor to be put back in if did ever sell it.I was just on rpm's website and saw can have stock intake lower ported and welded for vortech heads I am thinking of going this route if swap, or would it be better to drill heads for stock intake...ah so many options.

Re: Vortech or not....

i guess it is up to you,i am all about leaving things somewhat the way they came from gm,at least you know when you rebuild the stock motor you know what you have, and everything will work the way it should, fit etc

Re: Vortech or not....

to swap to the newer motor you'll need to make sure you got the 4x4 oil pan, add a retun line fitting to it. you'll need to relocate the knock sensor and maybe switch out a couple sensor but other that the intake work and maybe modifying the intercooler mounting rods its a pretty straight forward swap. make sure you don't damage the heat shields when you remove the manifolds. you probably won't be able to run as much boost either since it's a higher compression motor. several of us have done this swap.

Re: Vortech or not....

My engine is a later model Vortech, out of an 02 Envoy. I had the heads and lower intake from RPM already so, no issue there. Everything else bolted up just fine except for the oil pan. The stock pan would not bolt up, so I had to do some grinding on the aluminum pan to add the oil return line from the turbo.
