Walbro 255 issues.

I have a Walbro 255 pump and a Kirban AFPR. Approx 150 miles on pump since install. I've been chasing a fp issue lately and pretty much have it narrowed down to the pump (or installation of pump). The issues are Not B+, ground, fpr, fuel filter or anything else past the gas tank. I do Not have a leak between the fuel pump and the sending unit fuel line. I ran the pump and sending unit in a bucket and the volume seemed Very good and strong. When I first start up and drive the pressure is good. I lose FP the longer I drive. The pump seems to cavitate, spin faster (like there is no load) as the pressure drops. If I shut off for a moment the pump will make pressure (like air or space is bled out and fuel is back in the pump) and sound like it's under a normal load again but then if the injectors demand more fuel or I just cruise steady the pressure will drop and the pump speeds up again. The fast (cavitating?) pump will keep up with demand if it just idles but as demand increases the pressure (or volume actually) drops off My questions are, how much space should there be between the fuel pump and the bottom of the tank? Could it be the sock? Should I run a diff sock than the one that came with the pump? non at all?or the pump is to close to the bottom of the tank? It's in the stock location. Just a bad pump? I've about had it! I am Way too familiar with how the tank goes in and out now.
It has plenty of fuel in the tank too. Any ideas??

That is a odd problem. I havent heard of that before. Can't tell you what to check. But i can answer a few of your questions. The pump does mount in the stock location. It sits on the same base that the origional did. The filter that came with the pump should be OK to use. My guess is that the pump is bad.

Did you remove the pulsator when you put the new pump in?

Yes, I did remove the pulsator. I put a call into TI Automotive (Walbro said they handle the 255 pumps), hope to hear back from them tomorrow. In the mean time I'll drop the tank (again:) and see how long it takes (roughly) to free flow 6 gal's. Worst case, I have a diesel injection shop close by. Maybe they can flow test it for me.

Re: Walbro 255 issues.

What was the reason for replacing the pump????
Did it do this prior to changing the pump???
Was the AFPR changed at the same time??

I didn't notice in your original post if these were changed because of this problem or they occured after.

The pump that was in it failed. The AFPR was put on after the pump replacement. I thought that was the problem but same prob. with stock reg. and the new one. The symptoms are very similar to the old failing pump but the failing pump sounded weak and then quit. The Walbro pump sounds strong with a good load on it (like it's pushing fuel) at first. Then it starts to sound like its free wheeling, like it's sucking air or cavitating and yet it's totally submerged in fuel. If the pump is shut off for a moment it sounds strong with good pressure again for a short time but then starts over again, higher pump speed and lowwer volume/pressure, like a bypass in the pump itself. There is no pressure leak on the short connector line between the pump and the steel line. I verified that visually/mechanically in a bucket of water. I may do a prolonged "dead head" test today.
IDK, maybe I just don't want to believe that the Walbro pump is crap.

Ok- Turns out the new Walbro 255 pump is the problem. Replaced it with an Airtex pump and sending unit (E3625S) It's running Strong now :)

Where did you get your Walbro pump from? I just put one in my ty a few days ago. Didnt know there was already one in it till I got it apart. I had a 3-4 psi bouncy fuel pressure at idle and now I have a rock solid 42psi with the new pump.

I got my Walbro from High Flow Performance.

I didn't buy it off ebay. They claim it is a real built in USA Walbro pump. Also your link to the ebay auction is for a 255 LPH GM Walbro "Alternative"

Re: Walbro 255 issues.

Is walboro stamped on the pump? If not its a knockoff pump:2cents:

The pump is stamped "Walbro" inside a square sided "W" and "F0000169" "Made in USA"
I'm not here to debate weather or not I bought an "alternative" to a Walbro pump. I asked and was told when I ordered it, it is a true Walbro pump. I've been chasing this F'n prob. for a while. I've trouble shot everything , everyway I can think of , I'm posting my findings to put an end to my problem threads. THIS Walbro pump is SHIT. end of story.

I'm not here to debate weather or not I bought an "alternative" to a Walbro pump. I was told when I ordered it by telephone it is a true Walbro pump. It is correctly marked. Is it so hard to beleive that the pump could be defective?? I've been chasing this F'n prob. for a while. I've trouble shot everything , everyway I can think of , I'm posting my findings to put an end to my problem threads hoping to help other people ....and then when the problem is found I have people telling me what they "think" I bought. This Walbro pump is SHIT. end of story.

I didn't say you bought a fake, just asking for the knowledge:tup:

That doesn't mean it was a true Walbro. There was link to a warning from a fuel pump supplier posted here a few years ago that mentioned (and showed photos) of the knockoffs actually having the Walbro logo and "Made in the USA" engraved on them.

http://www.fuel-pumps.net/walbro-forgeries.html

The fact that this place claims to sell the genuine article but also sells the blatant knock-offs is a red flag.

I'm not badgering you, I'm posting this for the benefit of others.

Re: Walbro 255 issues.

Yeah, it very well could be. I'm waiting to hear from TI Automotive (Walbro) and I'm in contact with High Flow. I'll post when I have more info.

Re: Walbro 255 issues.

Walbro did apparently have a problem a couple years ago with real Walbro's failing. IMO I would only buy Walbro fuel pump from a trusted source with all the fakes that are available. I have no idea if you got a fake or not, but I had never heard of that company until today.
