SyTyless......for now!
Re: Want a Typhoon...but....

I agree with those who say to keep it a turbo V6. After all, that's part of the SyTy mystique. Usually there is some story involving catastrophic engine failure behind the V8 swaps, and the owner was too fearful or cheap to go back to stock. Good luck finding a Ty!:2cents:

Re: Want a Typhoon...but....

This is my :2cents: and insight about a daily driver SyTy.

This is an issue with V8 or V6 Turbo, the lower S-series front suspension last 50-75K miles before it need an overhaul. The brakes go through pads every 25K miles, the heater core goes. [My first one last 8 years and I probably need another now], & the rear window squeak on Typhoon's. If you replace all the moving parts/weatehr stripping you probably will have to address that issue every couple of years.

When I look at a stock SyTy their are 4 mechanical things that break or are PIA. Motor internal components are weak, Transmission is over whelmed by the torque of the motors, Propshaft is under sized and often takes out suff when it breaks & motor mount are a PIA to do. SyTy also need atleast year tune ups (plugs/cap rotor), The cap rotor could be address by LS1 coil but they aren't cheap either.

I have play with the idea of getting a SyTy and just rebuild it (Forged Motor/Trans built by a true a SyTy expert) for a daily driver, IMO if done right it would be very reliable that way. I would keep the mods to a minimal (maybe Nats stock turbo class). IMO it should last a long time if I kept on top of maintenance.

dgoodhue,

Awesome insight to the necessary repairs and maintanance issues for the Sy/Ty. With your feedback it seems that the smartest move may be to find a Typhoon owner who is selling and has gone through all the necessary engine build up and maintenance up keep. Also according to other members on this board...I should also make sure that modifications are with in reason if the Typhoon is expected to be a daily driver.

Thanks again for the great feedback!

I agree, find a bone-stock truck, and go from there. If you get a "modified" truck (cough, cough, T-56) you're kind of on your own as far as repairs go:( . And yes, the stock drivetrain will live and work behind a V8....changing the sparkplugs is easier, except for #8:2cents:
So what exactly are you trying to say there Bucko?!?!?!

Get a bone stock low mile Ty. Make sure it has good compression across the board.
........upgrade the fuel pump, put in a Gilbert propshaft, hardwire the IC pump, get a 2k 700R tranny rebuild from Waller.

There is a SUPER nice low mile Ty FS with stupid tail lights in central FL right now that IMO you should get.

Nah you dont want that one..... :p

Actually if I had the dough right now I'd be more than happy to take that beauty of machine off Adam's hands.
Who know he might still have it when the "Boss" says I can get one.
