Wanting to purchase Sy, couple questions

I'm looking to sell my 2wd s10 and my modded Eclipse GSX and combine the two into one, hence the Syclone. My only problem is, my s10 will get me anywhere, so basically, how good is a basically stock 40-70K mile Syclone at the daily driver role? I have no problem with maintenance and stuff like that, just as far as reliability goes. Also, is there an "upgrade path" section on this website or listed somewhere? Thanks all,

As far as reliability/daily driver roles go, there's all sorts of opinions on that one. If you drive it like any other car, keep it well tuned, and don't beat on it, sure, it can make a pretty fun daily. I daily drove my Typhoon with 3 or 4 12 hour drives each year for 2 years and it never left me stranded. :tup: But I didn't launch it from every stoplight, take it to the track on weekends and I kept it stock. It also helps if you do your own wrenching, because no dealer and/or mechanic is going to know anything about keeping your truck running.

When you start modding one, then you'd better have a reliable daily driver on hand. These trucks are picky beasts. There's no cheap/easy way to mod them. You can't just go buy any run of the mill "go fast" parts, put them on and expect results. There's proven formulas that work and don't work. (I'll dig up some of the old 'recipe's' later today... I need to get them up on SyTy.org anyway.)

As everyone else will say, "Search" is your friend. It doesn't work very well, but with a little patience, you'll find all the info you need to make your decision, because it's all been covered.

Whatever you decide, good luck in your search. It's a good time to be a buyer for one of these trucks, as I'm sure you'll find one you like!

i wouldn't consider one of these as a daily driver, too much to maintain.. similar to a gsx eclipse in that aspect..

wow, sellersville. More and more Sys are showing up in my old stomping grounds. There is a nice Sy in Perkasie that maybe you could go for a ride in if you want to see what they're like. PM Sy1616 if you wanna ask him about it.

Stay out of boost and drive it like a slow s10 and it should last you a long time.

I bought a Syclone almost a year ago now. It only had 38k miles on it when I bought it. There is no way in hell I would feel comfortable driving that daily. I’ve replaced the TPS sensor, boost solenoid, intercooler pump, spark plug wires, breaks, and there are still some small issues with it. You’re going to need a boost gauge or datamaster. It’s real smart to know how much boost you’re making. Oh and by the way my truck is still 100% stock. I think it’s a good idea to get one as a fun toy, but make sure you have a cheap honda or something as a backup source of transportation.

I agree....when my STi was a week old one of the brake dust shields swallowed a rock and started squeeling very badly. It refused to dislodge itself and i happened to be about 10 miles from A&T so i stopped by.

I didn't even have to sweet talk the female service tech...she just hopped in the car, heard the noise, agreed that it was prolly just a rock.....they threw it up on a lift and fixed it. Oh...this was after hours when everyone had just clocked out, yet they still stuck around to help me - and didn't charge me for it.

i bought my sy about a year and a few months ago. i have done some minor repair work maybe due to the previous owner, who knows. but other wise i drive it everyday and have even made a few long trips in it. it has ben as reliable as my acura integra gsr that i had before it. i have thoughts from time to time to let it go. it is not a low milage truck 128,xxx and it needs a paint job but it runs prety darn good and really is not that bad on gas. i get into on regular intervals, and boost lauch on occasion. if it is maintained and not abused, then i dont see why it cant be a daily driver.

Carol and Diane (the only service managers at A&T) are...um...rather mature women, more like Moms as opposed to potential dates. But they know cars very well and will never, ever cheat you or steer you wrong. In most dealerships, service is just a fancy word for "sales."

I have many good stories about A&T Subaru service. One winter for example, I slid on the ice and slammed my Forester's PS front wheel into a curb and bent it. Instead of selling me a new rim, they suggested to just use the spare rim. Little things like that.

i got my sy about 3-4 months ago and i drive it for my daily driver.. i only did some minor things to it, like exuast and ic pump thats about it.. and mine runs fine for me.. i dont see how it would be a problem. If you take care of it, it should last a while, just like any other car.. thats my :2cents:

i started driving mine after the previous owner stopped and it sat for a year. im the 3rd owner of mine with about 81K on it.honestly, ive replaced only body parts that rusted out, the rest has been good, and i changed the oil to full synthetic and put in a K&N filter. i get on it sometimes, but seriously, i;l say this since i own 4 - 16V turbo-mopar products(none are cheap to fix), this is just as reliable as they are, considering nothing has left me stranded in a long time

I love my SY, wanted one since i seen it in a mag back in the day. That being said i would never think of using it as a dd, mine is a hobby. Get a subbie or other boosted toy.
