Warning signs or just a false alarm? Trans???

Got a phone call from my wife yesterday.

She said the Typhoon did not want to shift into drive till very late in the RPM range.

I got home last night and checked the fluid level... it was about a quart low. There's

no leaks that I noticed from sitting in the garage. I might have lost some fluid when I put

the trans cooler up front but I thought I checked the fluids after that.. Humm..

I put a quart in it last night and the level was just above the full hot. Went out for a drive

and it shifted firm for me as it has for the last few weeks...

Anyone else had "warning" signs before theirs went out????

Thanks for any help...

You probably just had a spec of crud get caught in the governor or in the TV valve assembly. A lot of the units I work on don't have the filter to catch that crap in the case like it's supposed to. Any time you do a cooler, put the cooler and hoses together and then use an air hose to blow everything out for a long time before you actually hook it up to the transmission lines. All it takes is one little piece of metal or rubber from the hose you cut to make it "hiccup".

Re: Warning signs or just a false alarm? Trans???

Thanks for your reply....

We went up to US 131 Drag way Saturday night for their Street car shootout.

My wife did a great job driving the truck .. making it to the semifinals. She got 3d place

with a 13.21@99mph.. She had her best 60' 1.79 :) and a .56 light

Anyhow, I was thinking about updating the trans sometime this winter. I've seen a few

posts on the 4L80E for more durability.. but there would be adaptors involved along

with both shafts being shortened/leingthend.. and a controller for shifts on the trans.

I had a 700R in my 2wd S-10 small block setup running 10.60's@132mph that lasted

several years and was starting to slip there at the end.. it had several billet parts but

nothing special.

What would be your recomendations on the trans for her truck? I'm going to plan on

keeping it in the 11.49 range so I don't have to cage it. Turbo and Injectors and I'll make

a downpipe this fall. Could a 700 be preped to handle that enough to depend on daily?

What Stall would you go with... or is avalible with lockup? Price range?

Do you do transfer cases? What needs to be done there for durability?

If you don't want to post it here you can e-mail me direct does not have to be a firm

price just a general area so I can put it in the Typhoon budjet :)

Thanks for your advice and guidance..

Scott~

I would suggest getting a Gilbert propshaft ASAP.The stock one is marginal, and I bet yours has already been through hell and back.

X2 on the Gilbert. Her stock one will break at the double cardan and the back. Not too far from her feet. If not, look around on here and see if you can find the front propshaft loops. You need to do one or the other.

A 2wd is completely different on a trans than a 4wd. If you want something she can drive every day AND do bracket racing with the torque the syty's make, your asking a LOT from a 700. By the time you invest what it will take to make it handle that, you could've done a 4L80e. She will also run quicker with the 4L80e. As far as the driveshafts, you need a Gilbert for the front anyway so that is a cost already incurred. The rear driveshaft can be shortened for less than $100. The converter for the 80e runs $950. A true performance converter for the 700 will run about the same.
It just depends on how you want to be able to use the truck.

The only thing on transfer cases I suggest is going to a typhoon style 32 spline output shaft along with cryo of the internals along with a new chain. Every rebuild gets a new chain. Not worth tearing apart and not putting a new chain in it.

The difference between your S-10 and Typhoon,

Typhoon is heavier
The transmission has a greater load on it all the time (AWD)
Your Typhoon will have more torque than your SBC unless it was using forced induction. (If you used N20 You probably didn't spray off the line saving the transmission.)

Your could probably get a 700R4 to hold mids 11's in a Ty. I would get a 4L80E, do it once and never have to worry about it.

Re: Warning signs or just a false alarm? Trans???

Thanks for the replys guys.....

I'd rather ask and find out what she is going to tear up before it breaks and hurts somthing else

George... Could you e-mail me about the transmission? UR50SLO@aol.com

I'd like to get somthing going for it soon... It's her driver and I leared a long time ago it's best to

spend the money on the right parts the first time than screw around "just" making it survive.

I'd order the good front shaft for the 4L80 when it's done being built.. and have the rear shaft built

here local.

So.. send me a e-mail and we'll go over the specific's of what's all needed..

Thanks again,
Scott~
