Water leak

Sometime last year, '06, I noticed a small water leak off the bottom of the front dif. Dropped in some stop leak, not even sure which one now, and it eventually quit. Now I have the motor mounts out and I can see it was from the freeze plug behind the drivers side motor mount. Has anyone ever attempted to change that plug with the engine in the truck? I think I'm gonna leave well enough alone but was curious. I might get the old one out but how do I get the new one in?

I see from a quick search people have thought about it but not much in the way of hints.

Re: Water leak

Most freeze plug driver kits will work "off angle". I have done several in full size C/K trucks but not in the Sy Ty S10. If it was leaking before it will leak again, up to you to decide if it will get replaced sooner or later but rust or electrolys is is usually the culprit and stop leak is "stop gap" for a while.

Ya I know. I'll look into driver kits.

Thanks

Re: Water leak

Still cogitating changing this freeze plug. If I do, it looks like I'll have to completely remove the front dif. Just double-checking that it's doable with the motor in the truck. It's almost out now, one bolt and the half-shafts but, I'm assuming, it must go down and out toward the front to get the pinion flange over the support?

Re: Water leak

Well I'm gonna go for it. Looks like the front (under the mount) pas side was leaking also. Very irritating. Looks like I have to pull the drag link from the Pittman arm to get it out of the way to drop the dif.

Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated...

TIA

Re: Water leak

funny thing about these trucks. You do one thing and end up doing 5 others too.

Re: Water leak

Well you guys are certainly encouraging...:) Funny you mention "other" thing. While under the thing I was noticing how I might also change the dampener just in case mine may have slipped.

Re: Water leak

I did the damper, cover and pointer too. I checked my stock one and it was still dead on. The new one has deg. marks and looks a lot bettter.
