weird first gear problem

Ever since I adjusted the TV cable in the truck 1st gear acts funny but only at wot. Any partial throttle its completely fine but under WOT at the top of first gear it feels it is just completely slipping and almost like free-reving. The rpm's of the truck really dont shoot up or anything but then it bangs second like it should a split second later and everything is fine after that. I did notice I have lost 2 tenths in the 60' but i can still run the same et and mph at the track. I am completely stumpped right now. Anyone have an idea of what this is?

Something isn't right with the TV. Your pressures are too high and it's not allowing it to shift when it's supposed to. It's not slipping. Your truck is OUT of it's power band and your not accelerating anymore. That's what gives the appearance of slipping. First gear clutches hardly EVER burn up in the 700s.

So I need to back down the TV pressure, which way should I ratchet the cable then to lower it?

You shouldn't back anything out.

The TV cable isn't an adjustment per se. You should push in on the "D" button and shove the plunger all the way in to the right (as you stand in front of the truck). Then, with the truck off, rotate the throttle to WOT and the TV cable should ratchet out. That's it. If it just pops out or the truck still doesn't act right, replace the TV cable. It's stretched or the plastic teeth are worn out on it. If it still doesn't act right after that, you need to look for an internal problem.

I highly doubt that its your TV cable.. Does it shift at the correct RPM for all other gears? I'd prolly start by pulling the governor and making sure that its clean and moves freely... I think George has made a couple of posts explaining how to do this..

Re: weird first gear problem

What he is describing is directly linked to the line rise part of the system. It began when he started adjusting the TV cable. Either something is wrong with the cable(binding) or the TV valve(the one way back in the valve body) is intermittently hanging up. The governor doesn't "act up" occassionally. The TV system does. The TV system is critical to the 700r4 and the way it behaves and how long it will live. Do not use the TV system to adjust shift points. That's what the governor is for.

George, I know you asked us to ask you questions on another thread but I think it's easier on this one. My truck has the same problem but my brother can't find the damn tv cable:rant: or the "D" button you mentioned. Do you have some pics, please??? Truck is in BZ and I'm flying next month only :(.
Thanks,
Pedro

Re: weird first gear problem

Set your right hand on top of the COLD alternator. Stick your right thumb straight out toward the passenger side. It will be sitting right on top of the "D" of the TV cable.
