What battery to go with if running 400w amp

so I did a search and among the hundreds of threads about battery relocation, all I learned was that Optimas suck now. Captain Morgan in all his glory tried to do an ultimate battery thread, which I read through and not a single person who responded was using an amp for their radio.

I read a bunch of recommendations for Odyssey and Braille... but I don't think anyone is running a stereo amp with those either.

The POS DieHard that I had in my Ty is dead and the guy at Sears wants to prorate me and get me to buy some DieHard platinum (err some precious metal that sounds cool) for $220. I'd rather not drop $220 on a DieHard if I can get something better. However, I do like that Sears is 3 miles down the road and if I have a problem I can get it taken care of same day versus a mail order battery and getting service god knows where.

My Ty isn't a daily driver so it'll be sitting a lot. To make matters worse, my roommate just bought a jet ski (that he'll probably use once a year) which means my Ty is getting the boot out of the garage to make room for that POS. That being said the alarm will need to be activated which eliminates my option of unplugging the negative terminal when I'm not driving it.

I'm all ears...

I'm running a Delco battery from a 2011 Corvette, smaller than a stock, enought cranking amps, works for me.

It's not as much the battery as it is the charger.. with the syclone, wife's car, my dodge ram with two batteries
motorcycle, golf cart, camper, I've gone thru a lot of batteries. Four years ago I got two battery tender plus chargers and it solved the problem for me.

Well i guess im the only one with luck with optima's. I will agree RED TOP OPTIMA'S SUCK!!!!
That is just my opinion. I have had a few and they dont last.
But, I have had 2 yellow top optimas that have been rotated thru numerous vehicles. One is 12 years old, one is 9. So, i have nothing bad to say about the yellow tops, but i have had terrible luck with the red ones.

+1 for the battery tenders. they make any battery last longer.

I have had my red top going on 3yrs now. Never had a prob. The truck has sat for up to 4 or 5 weeks without being started or on a tender, starts right up even in -32f temps. I do have a batt disconnect switch, so when I shut the truck off I kill the batt.

I would not be all that concerned about powering a 400 watt amplifier, especially if it is a class D sub amplifier (Class D are more efficient). I have a 450 class a/b amplifier in my Syclone and I haven't done anything beside run the proper wiring and fuse for the amp.

I was thinking of going with the charger since nothing seems to hold a charge for more than a week. Still need something that's going to give me a solid 12v down the track though too...

Whatever battery you go with , get one of these . I picked up one for my expedition and its been working great . It was only $20 and you don't need to run an electrical cord from the house to the vehicle .

If you don't drive your truck a lot ,and when you do your blasting the stereo . Your alternator isn't being given enough time to recharge the battery . If you cant keep batteries charged for more than a week as you were saying , upgrading alternators may be necessary as well . Just letting it run at idle in park does not charge the battery as well as one would think , so a little cruising with no tunes on will help a ton also . Home a/c plug in chargers are great , but not convenient . On my hydraulic Lincoln towncar , keeping the 8 batteries charged sucks , so I feel your pain on that hassle .

I had a kinetic HC600 in typhoon and i was running a older non regulated power supply amp, zero issues unless a/c was on with headlamps and wipers, installed a cs144 and it was fine, YOU WILL NEED A GOOD STARTER the 454 starter wont work

Well I'm ready for the beatdown on this but........ everstart maxx from wally world. One in my 95 chevy just looked the other day it's from 06 and doin great. Another in my Scout that gets abused badly sits for weeks in the cold outdoors starts every time it's an 04 . Oh and the scout has no choke on it and hasta crank for what seems like an hour to start even shooting starting fluid in it. Optima in the TY and its dying now and I believe its an 09? Not sure on that but it's close to there was put in right when I bought it. And the optima is on a tender all winter every winter.

I'll commence with a beat down on this one hahaha... I have an EverStart in my DD (930pm battery died, no other option to get home, walmart only place open HAD to go there), I have to go in and swap out the battery almost every year. I can't even sit in my car on my lunch break with the radio on for 30min before the battery is dead. The only upside is the lackies at Wal-Mart never give me shit and just swap out the battery. I don't want to have to deal with the same shit on 2 cars.

I think we've barely had an inch of rain all year here... rust not an issue in SoCal

I stopped off at Sears again (but forgot my old battery D'oh!), talked to a different guy there about the batteries and he said he drag races an old Falcon and uses the Platinum with no problems. I've never really had any issues getting a battery replaced there in the past and the Die Hard has a 4 year warranty, so I might just go that route.

i saw those solar chargers on Summit, I'll probably grab one of those too, so I don't have to have an extension cable trailing out of the garage and risk the gardeners taking a weed wacker to it like they did our christmas lights.

agreed, i run about 1500 watts and i get a little strain when the lights are on and the fan motor is on but other than that i have no problems. will be upgrading to a few kinetic batteries soon. optimas are horrible, burned up 2 yellows in 3 months.

Re: What battery to go with if running 400w amp

I think I'll be ok with the DieEasy battery and a cheapy solar charger...

the amp is only running 2 5 3/4"s in the doors and 1 10" sub in the back and I'm not listening to anything with a ton of bass that's gonna be dragging the amp down constantly... I also plan on rigging everything up so its removable on race days.

My main concern aside from being able to run an alarm and stereo, is the battery maintaining a solid 12v at WOT down the track. Guess I'll have to wait and see how this POS does.

You can get a standard AC Delco battery for much, much less. Maybe try a 34/7yr or 75/7yr, depending on post arrangement.

Re: What battery to go with if running 400w amp

I have Optimas in two of my cars, the rest are GM ACDelcos. I've yet to have any real issues with the Optimas though, that said, they are all on battery tenders so they are constantly maintained as well.

I just put an ACDelco in the Ty, the Braille racing battery just didn't work well for how I drove the truck. The Odyssey batteries were just too expensive for my taste and I couldn't bring myself to put a WalMart battery in it either.

what's the difference between the 34 and the 75? size? one "premium" one "standard"? I'm kinda wanting to go with something a little bit smaller. Not to relocate or move down below the tray but to create a little more room for my KB CAI so the battery isn't cutting into the orange hose. Pretty sure the service guy at the dealership isn't gonna get the tape measure out and start measuring batteries for me.
