I should have the engine tonight or tomorrow depending on how ambitious I get. Now i'm taking the motor out to replace the motor mounts that are completely wasted and fix a small oil leak. Since the motor is out I was tossing around the idea of upgrading the heads and maybe the cam depending on what kind of deal I can work. My question is if I already go that far should I really think about nitrating the crank, replacing the connecting rods, pistons, 4 bolt mains ect. ect. while i've got it out and half way apart.

The motor only has 7,000 miles on it since it was rebuilt before I bought the truck. I don't plan on killing this truck, but i'm not very easy on it either so how big of a deal is this stuff going to be? Everything else thats done to it is in my sig. just wondering what ideas everyone had. I can scrape up the cash for some of this stuff, but this will definitely be on the budget side of a build, hense me doing most of the work. Anything you feel I missed please add.

leave it alone, and save up some money for a full build. you might want to paint the frame.

+1

with what you are wanting to do, your motor should be fine

I am actually pretty relieved you guys are saying that because I didn't want to spend the money, but do want it to hold up. So maybe I will leave it alone for awhile and just get all the rest of the tuning equipment and play Super Tuner Boy for a while. I just thought that I read it was easier to tune these motors with the better heads because they were less prone to detonate?

That's true but if you do your tuning right you won't have much if any at all detonation to worry about besides why pull apart something that doesn't need it yet is the way I look at it.

Good call, I'll have to touch that up as well.

You don't even want to know what I'm considering now, I'm actually talking to Adam (Vermont Ty) about the specifics of a wire tuck  Geez where does the madness stop, I think I figured out I just want my truck in a thousand and one pieces all over the floor, then I will be happy :D

Here's one of my main problems, drivers side motor mount was wasted

OK now that the motor is out and the majority is leaning towards just put it back, what stuff should I do while it's out? Any thoughts

Replace upgrade harmonic balancer
Obvisously touch up paint the engine bay
Block off EGR pathway
Put in 50# injectors
3 Bar map
I'm really considering having all the exhaust coated
Considering a wire tuck
Mini starter

EDIT: Replace oil pressure sensor

Any other ideas of stuff that would make my life easier in the future or stuff not to do that you did.

Thats your oil pressure sensor...a good excuse to R&R  about $30-$40

Oh well not the worst thing I've ever destoyed, I was going to change it anyway because the gauge is always bouncing around.

So whats the sensor in the 3 pic down on the side of the block, I thought that was the oil pressure

Thats a coolant temp sensor, I believe that one is for the guage??? The other temp sensor is right next to the thermostat housing, the ECM uses that one. Its one or the other, I can never remember which one is which! :rotf:

You're correct, the one on the driver's side of the block is for the gauge.

Re: What should I do with the engine out?

while engine is out i would:

-paint frame
-paint engine
-have exhaust coated
-zq8 steering box
-borgenson steering shaft
-jsm/rpm frame pads
-moroso solid mounts
-remove coil/egr/map bracket and relocate those to firewall/heater box. that bracket is heavy!

Re: What should I do with the engine out?

Since it's got only 7k miles on it, I'd just keep it totally how it is, unless you've got plenty of money to burn. In that case I'd go all out.

Yeah, no money to burn, just trying to do things the smartest way possible. I guess the smartest thing to do would be to sell the Sy and buy a Geo Metro, but that ain't gonna happen :rotf:

Re: What should I do with the engine out?

Aww hell naw. Haha. I'd stick it back in there how it is. As long as it's already running right. Do the stuff Branden said, or at least most of it. You'll love yourself for it.

Re: What should I do with the engine out?

Well since I'm going the majority suggested route here is what i've gotten done so far.

Motor dissasembled as far as I'm going to take this one, and it starting to go back together. I double checked everything I could while I had it apart, timing chain looked great and made sure my timing marks were as accurate as I could get them. Anyway timing cover is on and motor mounts are on. I need to get a new oil pan gasket and intake gasket tomorrow to go farther. If anyone ever has any suggestions along the way please through them out, incase I missed anything.

Re: What should I do with the engine out?

I wasn't planning on it, do you really think it's that important? I'm basically going the route we talked about of just running the motor the way it is and I have another motor I will start building the way I want it in the meanwhile. Remember everything is basically stock in there right now, the heads have nothing else done to them, would still suggest rockers and lifters, why??
