Turbo T/A not "high school" cheap IMO. However, can't go wrong with other n/a F-bodies. Lots of aftermarket support and cheap, go-fast parts. I'd say Mustang too, but would get flamed severly here.

Re: what would you buy?

Nothing turbocharged from the 90s would be truly affordable for a high school student imo. There is just too much to go wrong that could cost a lot of money. Now there are a ton of 90s turbo vehicles I would love to own, but I would have to be financially prepared for them. My Sy takes a lot of my money and it isn't even fast yet. :(

Dodge Omni GLH

I like my bro's dodge Shelby Charger. If I can ever find a minty one with low miles I'll buy it on the spot. Lesser condition / higher milage Shelby's can be had for $3k-5K  and they are a barrel of monkey's to play with. Same power train ans the GLH too.

3d gen supras aint bad, could do an sr20 swap on a 240, 300xztts are badass but can be pricey to fix, ls1/lt1 cars always kick ass, eclipse gsx as long as you don't push it too much. I love having a syclone but it really does suck as a first car unless you have another car to drive that's dependable. What's your price range?

Spirit R/T Made in 91-92. Just like a sy/ty you will have to learn how to work on it yourself. Parts are expensive for the motor. Very sleeper looking though which helps alot to avoid attracting the attention of the police. Front wheel drive so tractions a problem but mean in a roll.

look at the turbo dodges... omni, chargers, mini's, duster, shadow, spirit etc and like stated before the turbocoupe thunderbird and svo mustangs had really strong T 2.3's that can take a beating has a decent following..

Atleast for me, I am sure I would buy any other of the 90's Turbo cars. I usually don't buy high budget cars anymore.

DSM are unreliable (though probably in your Budget) and I don't like the budget ones much.
Of the DSM I like the Galant VR4 (but they are expensive)
4th Gen Supra's are too expensive
3rd Gen Supra's are pigs with headgasket problems
RX7 are unreliable and semi expensive (if I had to pick one 90's car, it would be that or Galant VR4)
300ZX TT are alright but I could see myself owning one, pricey again.

For budget cars you might to look into some of the 80's vehicle

Turbo Grand Prix might be worth while but I think they are pretty rare.
The SC 3.8 while not turbo seem to be pretty popular and used forced induction.

You could look into some of the 80's cars

Always the Turbo Dodge's (as mentioned above)
Turbo Sunbird
Maybe the Hot Air Turbo Regals (84/85)
Conquest (My firend had one and they are expensive to fix)
300ZX Turbo
Turbo Coupe's.

You could always try turbo charging something yourself, especially if you state emissions allow for that. However that isn't a beginner project.
