I mean when were you REALLY bitten by the bug!

Back in the prototype days?
When they were in the dealers?
The SyTy mailing list days?
Around for the creating of ISTA, SyTy.org & Sportmachines?
When the websites started taking over?

When did you start hanging out with the SyTy guys and having your life revolve around these trucks?

Re: When did you get into SyTys?

I fell in love with the truck when it was new, but I was only 5 years old at the time so I didn't really know anything about it. Really got involved when there was a possibility of the truck getting sold in '03 after it had a trans failure and the motor was dying

Re: When did you get into SyTys?

I remember the first time I drove one at the GMC dealership. In 1994 I was a line tech and the complaint was whining noise on hard acceleration. Well as a tech it is your duty to recreate "hard acceleration", well after a time or two with the customer I figured out he had no idea what a turbo was, did, or sounded like. I have loved these trucks ever since.

It was the year after I graduated.....I had heard they came out with a truck that was faster than the Vette in the 1/4......

All I could say to my self was....Man, I gotta get one of those......lol

Re: When did you get into SyTys?

The first time I really started getting into SyTys is when my dad told me that his co-worker (the owner of #156) was thinking of selling him the truck. I did some research, and was simply amazed. A few years later, when the engine blew, he wanted me to take a look at it and possibly rebuild it. This was about the time when we got our truck, and after driving one and feeling how the AWD sticks to the pavement, I was hooked. Now this year I drove my first Ty (and turbo V6 truck), and it has made the addiction all the stronger:tup: I definately want to get my own Sy or Ty (ideally both) down the road someday, along with a GN.

I can still remember seeing the 2 page ad with the Sy face to face with the 911.

Re: When did you get into SyTys?

Purchased new from the dealer. I was actually tipped off by a friend who saw the truck in a magazine (prototype with bbs type wheels) and knew that I was looking for something fast. I went to the dealer (local) and put a $500. deposit down site unseen for them to order one for me. Now my friend has one also he was finally able to find a decent one local. They are very addictive...to put it mildly.

Re: When did you get into SyTys?

My SyTy addiction happened in 3 stages.

Stage one- 1992, I would like to own one of these. After seeing one in action (from the losing side) and I thought they were really cool after talking ot the owner a few times.

Stage two- 95-97, I am going own one of these once I graduate from college (My purchase was delayed because I moved out on my own, got married, paid for my wedding, & bought a house)

Stage three, 2001, totally hooked. I didn't hit this until just after I bought my Sy. It was suposed be my driver, that last a couple of week.

Re: When did you get into SyTys?

it feels so long ago now, 4 years ago my dad made the mistake of showing me a picture of his typhoon clone that he built when he was 37 years old. and having just bought a 2 door 2 wheels drive 94 blazer i was hooked. It took me about a year and a half to find all my cladding and then i had my typhonie, with my dad building his clone and me building mine beceause we both couldnt find any real ones, he told me to find him a syclone, the one truck hes allways wanted and so i did. he is now the proud owner of sy 2017 and it sits in the heated garage with my ty i recently bought # 0026. and they're so addicting to the point that everything else just sits outside of the garadge like my dads 97 camaro ss, 67 camaro rs/ss and his new ssr. when his syclone blew a motor he told me he hated them but its funny when people tell us about the smile we get when we hit boost and that makes us realise how addicted we actually are!

Re: When did you get into SyTys?

Prior to Dec '02 I'd never heard of a Sy. Was looking for something to tinker with, hobby vech, whatever. Saw an ad for a "GMC Syclone, never raced." What the heck is a Syclone. Looked it up on the Internet and thought this is cool. Made a deal and been hooked ever since.

Re: When did you get into SyTys?

In 90 my shop teacher said there is a truck thats going to be faster then mine. My el camino was the fastest car in HS.

test drove one in end of 92. Bought a GT but never knew how rare it was. Just thought it was a truck with a kit. (cheap SY)

had no persional car in 2005. My wife said I could buy whatever I want as long as it was not another Stang.

Saw a ty at a dealer accross the street from my work. Decited on a TY, but bought a SY. Happy I did. (most of the time)

Re: When did you get into SyTys?

i was in 8th grade and it was time for my older brother to get his first car. My brother was all about the toyotas and i liked S-10s... i think it was just because my dad always said chevy's were pieces of shit haha

so long story short a guy down the street had one, and my friend and i would ride our bikes past his house everyday and drool, not even knowing what was under the hood, until one day we're with our friends dad and my friend says "see dad that's the truck i was telling you about!" and his dad goes "whoa its a syclone! those things are pretty fast! beats a new ferrari". we thought he was messing with us until we got to his house and he gave us the issue of car and driver... after reading the article i was hooked and wanted one even more.

some months later i saw the owner out front washing his truck and stopped by and talked to him for a lil bit, and he took me for a ride... just the way it pulled me into the seat and that first to second shift was enough for me. I wanted one ever since.

I won't say that i've happily owned my syclone since 2001, since i've had nothing but the worst possible luck with the thing since i got it, and even worse luck with the typhoon as some of you know. But for some reason i can't bring myself to get rid of them.

My room mate has been hassling me non stop these last few months to sell all 3 of my cars and just get a CTS-V. The Caddy's are cool n shit... but i know i won't park the caddy at the grocery store and give it that lil look back and smile when i'm walkin into the store, like i do with the sy.

When my room mate got his 300 SRT8 it was awesome cause no one had one. Now I see em everywhere. Same with the CTS-V. I just like having something that you dont see 5 of on a 2 mile trip to the store.

just my :2cents:

Re: When did you get into SyTys?

In the 90's , a customer bought one and I saw it each year twice for its' Detailing. He always talked to me about his new mods, then gave me a launch since he knew I was around Ferrari's,Porsche's and collector muscle.
I was in Topeka Ks. handing the keys over to a wealthy guy who had just spoken for my Mercedes 560SEC AMG.....then I saw a strange shape under a car cover in his stable .....it was a Syclone in great shape.
Hooked since 99'.

Re: When did you get into SyTys?

Early 91, just turned 16 with a fresh DL and a buddy and i went to the local GMC dealer to see if we could get some info and whatnot(figured they wouldnt have one) and what do you know, right there on the showroom floor, i must have walked around that truck drooling so much that had to replace the tile, 26K on the sticker, and i actually called and got an insurance price on it(yeah like i ever had a chance at buying one) dont remember what the ins quote, but it didnt matter anyways.

Been hooked ever since and finanlly got the money to buy a Syclone in 2002 and couldnt find a low mile truck in my price range and then stumbled on the Sonoma GT and liked what i saw and bought #492 and drove it daily for 3 months and when i realized how rare they really were i decided that i wanted to take mine off the road and make it something speacial and fast, and well its special but not so fast at the moment.

Then found mself in deed of a Daily driver again late last year, and thought i could take a good deal on a Ty that was a theft recovery and make it my DD, but once i got it home and running found the engine knocked, and well i drove it for about 5-6 months daily till the engine gave up, but not without racing it and putting 18 PSI thought it.

I LOVE THESE TRUCKS.

Re: When did you get into SyTys?

Well, here's my order of events -

1) During 91-92, read just about every magazine on them. I was kinda pissed when they discontinued the SY, all the mag's said they will build 'em for a couple of years at least.

2) Early '92, I was invited on a GMC test drive - they let you drive a Sonoma GT and a SY, then rode shotgun with a race car driver in a TY. I swear he got that thing up on two wheels...

3) Looked for 4 years, bought a Ty in '96.
