where to find chip on typhoon?

I bought a used typhoon (red/red 16k miles). The previous owners says there is a chip on it.

Where is the ecu (ecm, PCM, etc...whatever it is called) located? How do i know if the truck is running properly on this chip?

Can i just remove the chip and the stock computer will take over?

sorry if these questions have been asked 8000 times before. :)

thanks.

Re: where to find chip on typhoon?

The ECM is located under the dash on the passenger side. If you remove the bottom panel, you will see it up there. You remove the bolt and work the ECM out from behind the dash.

There might be a rectangular cover on the ECM........remove that to see if you have a chip. If you already have something in there, the cover may not have fit anymore, so it could be missing.

As far as knowing how well the truck is running, I would invest in a datalogging program like Datamaster. You can check that out at http://www.ttspowersystems.com

NO you cannot just remove the chip. Typically, you could have either a piggyback setup or a completely new chip soldered in. Either way, you will need to have SOME sort of chip in there if you remove the old one.

Yes, 8001 now. ;)

Nice find on the Ty.

Re: where to find chip on typhoon?

so there was originally a "stock" chip? I had a 2003 cobra mustang that previoiusly had a chip...but once the chip was removed the stock PCM took over with the stock settings.

Since I am not into "tuning" (i ain't too bright either) things, would there be somewhere local to me (i am in harrisburg, PA) that would be able to "datalog" my truck to see if it is okay?

haha.. thanks for making it 8001!!!!

I appreciate the help. Just want to make sure the thing runs right... i don't need to floor it to find out it was running too lean or something dumb.

Yes, there is a stock chip. Chip simply means an EPROM where all the information is stored on how your engine handles all of the sensor's inputs. Your Cobra was OBDII, which is a little different with flash programming. But with our trucks, another EPROM is introduced to the system with new parameters, which the engine will then read. One main reason you have to keep the stock chip in there is that half of the EPROM "module" also contains your ESC (spark control), so when you piggy back the chip, essentially you are NOT using the stock "chip", but you are using the ESC. Being that you can't really "separate" them, you're stuck to piggy backing in most cases.

I'm sure there will be someone local to you willing to help. Datamaster doesn't really require a PhD or anything, just ask a lot of questions. There are plenty of people here to help you out. It should be one of your first "mods" hands down.

Re: where to find chip on typhoon?

I disconnected my neg terminal on the battery, then took the bottom of the dash apart & side panel off ... then removed the one bolt that held the ECM in place and slowly worked it down to wear i can see it.... now what.

I have a buddy who said he can come over on Sunday and check it out. It all looks normal to me?

Am i able to buy a new stock chip? I am not big on messing with stuff and with this thing being so prestine I would probably be happier on stock.

I am not taking it drag racing, but i am sure I will floor it once in a while to mess around.

If the factory seal isnt broken, then dont mess with it.

Instead, show us some pics of your new ride!

Re: where to find chip on typhoon?

so i got my chip from GM and when i went to install it, i guess the "hyper tech" chip was "piggybacked" to my original stock chip???

My new GM chip looked exactly like the chip that attached to the hypertech..... wish i had known what the hell i was looking for a 2 weeks ago......

Now I have a stock chip and a hypertech chip to sell. :)

I ate a big red candle.
Re: where to find chip on typhoon?

 Oops......that sucks

Maybe you can get a refund?! Better yet, now you've got an extra chip. You could send to one of the tuners and have a custom burnt chip and keep your original as a backup with stock settings!
