Where to mount a remote tranny filter?

I just recieved my remote mount transmission filer from Summit. I ordered it yesterday morning so their shipping department is really on the ball! But their sales department isn't so great since they told me the fittings on it was 3/8" NPT and it is actually 1/4" NPT. :doh:

It came with a HUGE filter. It looks like the kind of filter you would put on a big diesel truck. I am looking around the engine compartment and I don't see any obvious locations to mount it.

Where are some spots that you have mounted yours or have seen other people mount theirs?

I installed mine under the truck,on the front cross member I will post pictures when I get back.

If you have relocated your battery and deleted your vacuum reservoir, the location under where the battery tray used to be is the perfect place for it:

You can even reuse the bolt that held the battery tray in place to hold the filter housing to the sheet metal. All you have to do is grind a small notch in the washer on the bolt for clearance on the top of the housing. And there is plenty of room to spin the filter on and off (the big one that comes with the kit). I ended up using a short version for my daily driver:

That filter is mounted on the passenge side on the frame near the front of the truck. That location will NOT work on a syty, however.

Here is a comparison of the filters to help you decide what your other options may be:

this is how i did mine, the battery tray fits fine. i usually change it when doing plugs, so i got the fenderwell off anyway.

What's the best flowing high-pressure filter we can use? I'm using a K&N Performance Gold filter for my aux filter and I'm concerned it might be restricting flow to some degree. I wonder if anyone's done a comparison of filters for aux tranny filter duty?

No I was too lazy to do that. I pick up new lines at the auto part store and went with a short section of hose until I had more time to install the hard lines all the way. If you look in the 1st and 2nd pictures you can still see the extra tubing nut :rotf: .

That's what I did when I did mine 5 years ago. Need to convert those over to braided stainless steel... Anywho, if you do opt to cut the hard lines and attach the supplied rubber hose, you MUST FLARE THE END OF THE LINE SLIGHTLY! If you don't you run the risk of the line blowing off. Having a line blow off can take out your transmission and/or catch your truck on fire if enough ATF gets in the wrong place. This has happened to several folks on here over the years so, it's not as far fetched as it sounds.

Thank You, I was having a hard time thinking about where to install it (because we all know space is limited on these trucks). Anyhow that was the only place that fit my twisted way of thinking.

another place to mount, if you don't have the stock air intake setup...is near the driver's side headlight.

I have that kit from Summit on both my trucks. It *should* have provision for a temperature sender, you can see the 1/8" NPT plug in between the barbed fittngs to cap off the port if you choose not to use it. However as we all know, the "product may vary slightly from the description". Last year it seemed that all the manufacturers stopped drilling and tapping the filter housings for this feature. I would recommend calling and asking if it has it or not before ordering.

The filter housing that I recieved did not come tapped for a sensor.

All of those locations look great! Now I'm going to have to pick one.

Call me stupid or ill-informed but I am currious if there is any reason why we can't use a stock remote oil filter as a tranny filter. I have an extra and don't know what to do with it. Would it work?

Has anybody deleted the vac ball and put the remote filter under the battery tray? Is there enough room there?

Check your settings the pictures show up ok on mine. let me know and I can e-mail them to you if need be.

They work for me.... there is enough room under the battery without the vacuum ball. I ended up just putting a replaceable inline canister style filter on my truck because I couldn't find a place I liked to mount the B&M filter. It's simple and clean. will post a pic on tuesday (along with a few other things I keep meaning to take pics off :roll: )
It helped that I have 3/8" aluminum trans lines though :lol:
