Which Wastegate should I run

So I am running into some boost control issues with my setup and I think my wastegate is simply too small.

My engine is a SBC 350, vortec heads, ramjet intake, 50lb injectors, and a PTE 60 turbo all being driven by code 59..

I am currently running a turbonetics Deltagate Mark II. It has a 1.25"(31.75mm) valve and a 3 PSI spring installed..
The lower port of the wastegate is plumbed to the pressure port on the turbo and the upper port is just vented to the atmosphere.
Its my understanding that this setup is supposed to provide base(spring pressure) boost.

My shortblock is not built and not able to handle large amounts of boost(yet). This setup is allowing it to creep up over 16lbs..

I know very little about wastegates. I did a search on Summit and they sell quite a few different brands/models.
I want to get a gate that will work now and when I have a built short-block installed and I want to run 20ish lbs of boost..
I also want rock solid boost control.
One thing I always hated about my Ty is that the boost would float between 13 and 16 psi at WOT.
I want mine to settle in at the desired boost level and just sit there..

Would something like this do the job:

Also, I am going to have to re-do my wastegate plumbing to mate the new flanges/v-bands.. Is my current setup proper or should anything be changed:

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/recommendations.

You can lose the top of the wastegate and check
which spring color you have they sell lower pressure
springs for your 8 psi boost levels !!!

I already installed a 3 PSI spring.. Its not doing the job..

Did you check if the wastegate diafram is
leaking or damage this can cause a boost creep
if the gate valve does not open !!!

Re: Which Wastegate should I run

My guess would be (since you have a large engine and a single turbo that needs to bypass as much as possible for now) the bigger the better and of coarse great quality. Not sure what $ is but this one looks nice and big and I think would be enough.

60 mm = 2.36220 " which should flow enough to keep the boost down for now like you want, and be large enough to control it when you want to crank it up.

Just my thoughts....

from the picture it looks like its plumbed back into your downpipe not to atmosphere. if that is indeed the case its plumbed back too close to the turbo. needs to be further downstream. i can bet your loseing some of the wastegates efficency due to poor scaveging. ( please excuse the spelling)

I'm thinking along the same lines as you. However I think 60mm might be a bit overkill and big $$.. I was hoping that we would have someone on the board with some wastegate sizing experience that could tell me what size would suffice. I'm thinking a 45 or 55mm gate would do the job but I would like to know for sure..

I was wondering the same thing.. I could probable flip it around, cap off the return pipe, and vent it to the atmosphere as a test...

20 psi and it is not a built motor? Well, the lower the pressure, the bigger the gate needed. I would say to use a 50 mm or bigger. Your dp may not be suited for a gate that big, you may have to mod it and/or vent to the atmosphere. Pm me for some other ideas, i could use better pics. There is another member running a single turbo sbc, Alex. he is running a precision 66 mm and has ran a tial 60 without any problems.

I did.. Its like new.. No rips.. I also pressure tested the gate and it does start to open at 3psi. At 5psi the gate is fully open..

I don't intend to run 20psi until I have a built shortblock.. What I was saying is that I want a gate that will work now with low boost and also with higher boost later down the road..

I built the downpipe so I can certainly mod it or just build a new one to suit any style gate I want to run.. If I recall correctly the port on the back of the PTE housing for the wastegate is no where near 50mm.. My guess is that its around 40 or so.. That being said would a 50 or 60mm gate really help much?

Here is another pic of the wastegate setup:

Re: Which Wastegate should I run

So I think I've decided to go with a 50mm gate(not sure which brand yet).. I've been doing some reading. Too small and you can't control boost.. Too big and it can cause your boost to drop too low when it opens.. Then it closes back up and boost goes up.. Opens up goes too low, etc, etc, over and over..

I am also most likely going to move the return down further on the downpipe for better scavenging. I can move it down another foot or so without too much hassle..
