which way turn torsion to raise?

Tighten the bolt to raise.

Make sure you adjust them out equally on both sides. I usually take a measurement to the head of the bolt and make the other side the same.

You'll need an alignment or you'll wear out the inside tread of your tires.

You'll wear out the OUTSIDE if you RAISE it. The inside if you lower it with out moving the upper A arms out farther to compensate for the angle. Adapter plates for mounting the upper ball joints out farther would be really nice! Does any one make them?

One of my truck's previous owners lowered the front end and the truck still has original tires, the insides are severely worn and showing cords in some areas. When I put my new tires on in spring, is a front end alignment all I will need to assure even tire wear or do I need to do something with the torsion bars at the same time? I would actually like to raise the front end 1/2" back upwards, it's a little too low for me now.

Yes - that should be it. If you are going to raise it back up - do it yourself and drive it for a couple days before the alignment. The truck is going to settle and you probably don't want to drop $70 twice for an alignment.

I went to the Firestone shop the other day and they have a lifetime alignment for $170. If I had a new car it would probably be worth it. I can't really justify it on 100K mile truck.

Thanks Dave, I will do that. BTW is raising the truck back up something I can do on my own? I heard you need a "Big Freakin' Wrench", I don't think I own any of those.

Well I don't know the EXACT size but I did mine with a little brute force and a standard length socket. Lowering it is much easier then raising it. I am guessing if you have some of the weight off the front wheels it will be easier - but I am not sure on that.

thanks for the info, it was a 18 mm which for some reason does not come in 2 of my metric tool sets, so i used a worn 11/16 inch, also soaking torision bolt with w-40 made it easier to turn!
