I have no radio and no interior. I just have this one seat, will add another eventually though.

Glass is something I have debated for a long time. I want to find something that is lighter than stock but does not have the race car look of speed glass with the mounting tabs.

I have also kicked around the carpet idea for quite awhile. I want to remove the sound deadening material but as raspy and ignorant as my motor is I think that is something I will regret.

I pulled the door panels to cut out the crash bars and whatnot and was dissapointed to find out just about everything on the insides was structural.

I am out of ideas..... anyone got any?

Re: Who has the lightest truck and...

...you might be able to get ideas from the pikes peak Syclone or Nascar-ish vehicles (like):
-lightweight aluminum or carbon fiber Typhoon tailgate, and lightweight rear glass hatch
-Aluminum or fiberglass interior (maybe even floor pan, especially in the rear)
-lighweight window glass (saw a vintage vette with cloth straps attached to door windows for up/down movement)
-short/lightweight exhaust system (not running out the back)
-obviously the 9" rear end/housing is heavy and a lighter tubed framed backhalf would cut weight
-lightweight or tubular tranny mount, aluminum driveshaft (or carbon fiber)
-aluminum racing seats (aluminum or carbon fiber) with slip on fabric
-smaller lighter brakes (get rid of parking brake, hood latch, maybe door latch mechanisms)
-and in the "old days" guys used to acid dip body components to make em lighter <grin>
but you didnt want to lean on anything or it would bend/dent. Carbon fiber doors, hood, fenders bumpers might help. Removal of door mirrors/remote control, pw, overhead console/interior lights/wiring.

Re: Who has the lightest truck and...

I think the ultimate lightest truck is the VTG one from norway or somewhere in Europe. They hacked the truck up until it was basically a frame, engine, seat, steering wheel, and gas pedal. Maybe someone has a picture?

Re: Who has the lightest truck and...

As crazy as I am about weight reduction and making my truck fast(and Silly will attest that I am indeed insane ;) ), I have refused to give up A/C, or a radio (though the speakerbox that I will be building shortly will be removeable for races).

If it's still too heavy once everything else is done, I'll just turn up the boost a bit more ;)

Re: Who has the lightest truck and...

I got mine weighed this weekend and it is 3480# w/a 1/4 tank of gas. I removed the whole wiper system. Installed a new chinese tailgate from LMC truck, it only weighed 21#. Cowl hood no insulation. I suspect it weighed more than stock. Removed all stereo components including rear carpet and side panels with rear speakers.

Re: Who has the lightest truck and...

I did front coilovers & rear fiberglass springs and lost between 110-120lbs off the truck. By doing this I was able to lower the front and back while stiffening the suspension. now with the addition of caltracs I cant spin the tires on a boost launch if I try. Good suspension investment that comes with weight drop

i have fiberglass door skins and i have heard of entire fiberglass doors but then there is no window movement. i dont know how much the diff is between steel skins and fiberglass skins are but i do own some that are rotting in my shed( they are in good shape) if anyone wants them, just pay for shipping. they are race glass for pro trucks, stock form

Re: Who has the lightest truck and...

Some Lexan M10 windows,back window?????
Plasma cut holes in the non structural areas throughout the truck.
Take off anti sway bar/s.
Lightweight brakes will drop a lot of weight.

Re: Who has the lightest truck and...

I built my truck specifically for time trials so I've focused on many aspects in order to lighten things up. I won't have a weight until I get a chance to get on the scales to corner and crossweight it, but I'm guessing it should come in under 3000 lbs with fully safety structure.

I won't get into the small things although they do add up and I can't remember half of them anyway.

Things that lightened up the truck:

Aluminum Bowtie V6, aluminum heads, tubular exhaust headers
Custom tubular coil over front suspension tied into safety structure
3 link rear suspension w/ panhard bar coil over suspension tied into safety structure
Bed delete using widebody fiberglass bed panels instead
Front widebody fiberglass fenders
Tailgate with big hole for rear mounted radiator to facilitate air flow. No tailgate linkage
No HVAC, Cruise, AC, Carpet, interior panels, stereo, sound deading
Lightweight Racetech fiberglass racing seats
BBS forged aluminum racing wheels w/ magnesium centers
Disc brake conversion rear
Stand alone Big Stuff 3 wiring harness cleans up unnecessary wiring
Aluminum core support w/ fiberglass headlight bezels
Fiberglass hood (waiting for someone to come through with a carbon fiber hood
Lightweight battery
No fender wells, going to fab some plastic ones from a Dodge Dakota
Lexan rear window
Seat belt delete
Manual brakes and brake booster delete
Larger but lighter 4 piston Alcon front brake calipers
Air to water IC delete
Momo steering wheel
Aluminum racing fuel cell
Solid motor mounts
No spare tire obviously
Billet aluminum oil pump
Removed torsion bar and transmission crossmembers replaced with tubular unit
Aluminum drive shaft
LS1 style power steering pump

Things that will increase the weight of truck, but are necessary for road racing:

8 Point safety structure
Additional tubular chrome moly triangulation to stiffen chasis up
4l80E with huge aluminum trans pan with extra fluid capacity
Large Setrab tranny cooler
Larger Ron Davis mounted radiator with oil cooler built in
Extra plumbing necessary to get circulate radiator fluid from rear to engine and back
Extra fluid to fill those lines and radiator volume
Accusump
5 point Racetech racing harnesses
Fire supression system
Larger 13.5x1.25 front brake rotors
Huge A2A front mount intercooler
Paddle shifter
Trans computer
External wastegate on larger than stock turbo
Window safety net with mounting tabs and attachments
Larger Nitto NT01 R compound 315 35 17 tires on all four corners
Larger thicker longer wheel studs
Oil catch can
Billet aluminum reusable oil filter
Lap time transponder and data logger
Larger front prop shaft
Tubular chrome moly drive shaft loop
Billet alumium tubular power steering cooler
Camera and camera mount

Still one of my favorite trucks being built

Maybe my memory is fuzzy, but weren't there some s-trucks with plastic inners?

Adam deffinatly is on his way to a Uber light machine.

I built/fabbed up these aluminum rod cladding brackets by simply hand hammer forging them on an anvil then drilling/milling and tapping them. I was amazed how heavy the originals were when holding them !!!! takes about ten minutes each....so get to hammering!

Re: Who has the lightest truck and...

Can't use these with the aluminum core support. Will have to fab up some way longer ones.

Of course these were stock ,as is my Sy...but you could still use the same concept Adam. The Alum. rod can be had at any good hardware store. 4' lengths....I think I bought this set of rods from ACE Hardware....a chain/franchise here in the Midwest and I think I saw some in Sacramento last time I looked.
A one pound mallet and a good vise platform,,,,,steady with the Kung-fu grip and pound evenly.;) They'll be stout and weigh next to nothing comparitively.
