who's got an exhaust cut out?

ive been considering getting an electronic exhaust cut out for a while now... and i did a search and didnt really find the answer i was looking for...

for those that have the exhaust cut out... how did you install it? this would be a pointless mod if you installed it after the cat. but doesnt the downpipe go right into the cat? i dont really want to hack into the downpipe, so would i need to take off the cat, cut the exhaust pipe down a bit, reinstall the cat, and then install the cut out?

A friend of mine has one on his 87 GN he just replaced the cat with the dump. He said it helped the turbo spool a lot!! I imagine you should install it the same way, by just replacing the cat.

thats what i would like to do, but theres no way id pass a smog test without a cat...

install it right before the cat in the DP, leave the cat or youll regret it come inspection time.

i have a cutout on the stock DP before the cat, but i put on a new universial cat, i like it a lot but wish it was a electric one, i had the stock dp cut back to the bend and had reducers welded on to go from stock dp to 3 inch in/out cutout. so i guess i hacked it, but i didnt see much other way to do it . sorry i dont have pictures til next week.

i have that exact one on my pte downpipe it is right under the turbo and its awesome

if you dint have an "inspection", would it be a good idea? for spool times ect?
i dont have a smog test, and i know a few people that can "help".

Word of advice. They ware out fast. I've heard the same problems with some F-body guys if you use it alot. I used mine a little here and there, and its stuck open about1/8" Just open enough to where you can hear the N/A part of the motor off idle and then you hear the turbo very very nicely.

If you're going to use it like once or twice a month it'll be nice to have, but if you use it often I'll go out fast.

yeah its not something i'd be using constantly but it would be nice to have for the track and for playin around on the street. It's got a 4year warranty, so i guess i can always take it out if it breaks.

I'll probably ditch the stock cat and go with a high flow cat and just trim back the exhaust pipe so i dont have to cut the downpipe. And, use clamps instead of welding when doing the install, so removal isnt that much of a pain in the ass.


Wasn't there a post a lil while back with someone selling highflow cats really cheap?

I run the same one...use it all the time. I would be interested in want goes wrong with them as I have had mine for three years with no problems. FWIW...there seems to be about 2 tenths better on my runs with it open.

So, if I didnt have to worry about emissions, cats, mufflers, stuff like that, would you jus run 3inch pipe to about the rear end?? The reason I ask, I dont have to worry about that crap, im already cat-less and was considering getting rid of the muffler I got too....I know it would be loud but im not worried about that...Jus curious about performance loss/gain......

Couldn't you just axe all after the downpipe in your situation? Your already gonna be running open exhaust so why the need for exhaust it's just weight on your truck in your case if so.

To answer my own ???, I jus went outside and yanked it off, it was all flanged nice and clean, HOLY CRAP!!!! what a difference...not jus spool up but also sound, i love how that turbo jus whistles now in the exhaust, and its not really that much louder.........

I run an internal gate. It works on any type of exhaust. (providing you can attach it)

So, after i did that last nite, I have a hard time building boost for my launch, only getting 5lbs instead 15....Could my muffler be giving jus enough back pressure to help build for launching???

could be, what type of wastegate are you running? you might want to adjust it.

it is an Applied Tech. ext wastegate and its set at about 15lbs...I get 15lbs once im running, im jus not getting a 15lb build for my launch......

I guess I need an explaination for this....I was under the impression that if you remove the cat, or anything that removes backpressure from the original wastegate, you will get wicked boost spikes, and bad things happening. Is this only true if you have a purely stock truck with stock wastegate? I guess I haven't seen a whole lot of aftermarket turbo setups that retain an internal wastegate; seems that most go with an external on the DP since many go with a PTE DP anyway......
If you could educate me, I'd appreciate it.
