who's got an exhaust cut out?

Re: who's got an exhaust cut out?

adam,
lets see if i can help, all pte's are internal wastegates, rpm's are external, the larger exhuast housing makes for a larger puck in the wastegate and better flow contributing to better control of boost spikes. Most people with pte's run the stock internal because it still is good at controlling the exhaust.

on a totally stock set up, the turbine housing is so small that the circuit for the internal wastgate cannot flow the proper amount of air, because of this when there is little to no backpressure, the turbo can spool so fast the the wastegate cannot act and flow fast enought to keep up with the exhuast, causing boost spikes.
some have better luck with stock trucks than other, i ran a boost valve on a 20g(close to stock) and it works great with open exhuast, one thing that helped was to port the exhuast side so that the exhuast can flow better once the gate is opened.

i hope this helps, if im wrong, let me know, i learn new things every day.

That makes sense....thanks. Both of my trucks were running stock turbos, so I'd never experienced a PTE or RPM setup up close, so I wasn't sure that all PTE's were internal gates. All I'd known was that the stock setup is internal, is sub-par for a variety of reasons, and deleting the cat off my first Ty resulted in the owner splitting the crank in half.... Thanks for the education.

Re: who's got an exhaust cut out?

I have a manual exhaust valve (thats how their called here in Mexico) right behind the cat and it works great at the pull or push of a lever that is perfectly located between the passenger seat and the jack cover. The turbo spins a lot quicker and makes an awsome swooosh sound but i mean its LOUD, if i stab it around people they'll run for cover, hehe. The wastegate's flapping noise is also some to hear. Its definetly worth the 60 bucks i paid for it installed.
A friend of mine has some electric cut outs on his 04 Vette he installed not long ago and one of them crapped out right away.
I've read from the guys that know and placing it before the cat with out a ported wastegate is askin for ugly boost spikes and it's side effects.
Hope this helps.

The "it's works on any type of exhaust. (providing you can attach it)" ...applies to the cutout not an internal wastegate.

I guess I need an explaination for this....I was under the impression that if you remove the cat, or anything that removes backpressure from the original wastegate, you will get wicked boost spikes, and bad things happening. Is this only true if you have a purely stock truck with stock wastegate? I guess I haven't seen a whole lot of aftermarket turbo setups that retain an internal wastegate; seems that most go with an external on the DP since many go with a PTE DP anyway......
If you could educate me, I'd appreciate it.

Like mentioned before...the pte dp are internal.
I have had several turbo setups on both external and internal setups. I can control my internal setup much better than any of my external setups. It takes some patience and time though to set it up properly, but that applies in both setups. Playing with the spring pressure and controllers to work with the turbo and exhaust setup is the key. What works for one setup may not work the same on another.

I have mine dialed in with a Blitz controller and am using the PSI auto mode. It's dead on. If i set it to 22#, I get 22#, if I set it to 29# , I get 29#, etc. It took me some time to get it right, but it was worth it in the end. Most sytyer's with the Blitz can't get them to run in the psi auto mode. Goes to show that every setup is different. The problem I always had with externals was having them start sticking.

My new twin turbo build has externals. Don't have them set up yet, but I am sure they will be fine.
