Why a boost controller

Mr. Keith
Whats the purpose of a boost controller? Are wastegates that ineffective or inaccurate? What is the benefit for having one? Yeah I know, a pretty junior question but I have never used a boost controller on any turbo car I owned....but then again, I havent had any vehicle that run the numbers I see on this site.....therefore, I ask the question...

Re: Why a boost controller

stock trucks boost is controled by the computer via a boost solenoid. controler takes place of that and allows the boost to be adjusted by turning a knob in the cabin. I am able to run 14lbs driving around and can bump to 20lbs by pushing a button.

I'm not sure what set-up your using but if it is just a BC,
is changing the amount of boost without changing the amount of fuel a good idea?

I thought I read that Sy/Ty's have no fuel map for anything after 14lbs and just keep using it for any pressure level after that.

14 lbs to 20 lbs without a change in the fuel map sounds like a lot unless your running rich at 14lbs so you are not too lean at 20 lbs.

FWIW,
I've only heard of using boost controllers when the stock stuff won't hold.

i.e. you want to run 20 PSI and the stock wastegate will open at 15lbs so you use a boost controller to bypass some of the pressure away from the wastegate allowing it to hold the higher pressures (to adjust the boost pressure you adjust the amount of wastegate pressure bypassed)

With the stock 2 bar chip and map sensor, yes. A 3 bar map sensor and chip is needed to "safely" run more than 14.7 lbs.

Greddy spec. 2 controller is the way to go.

I'm sold.....Saving my pennies as we speak....I have a manual boost valve and it seems to work but I would feel better a boost controller since I am not ready for a rebuild/ engine.....

Re: Why a boost controller

keep in mind the best boost controller in the world will not compensate for an inadequate wastegate. With that being said, make sure if you gut the cat or run a high flow cat you want to upgrade the wastegate prior to adjusting boost with a controller.

Now if you have an Ultimate Chip which will allow you to change the boost level, is there any need for a controller?

Re: Why a boost controller

Considering how inadequate our stock wastegates are, the Ultimate chip's boost control can only do so much. A lot of people like to port out the stock wastegate to maintain boost control through the trucks ecu but I have an ITS Minigate and Greddy Profec B electronic boost controller getting ready to go on. My friend had this exact setup on his Typhoon with the Ultimate not controlling boost and boost was rock solid even with a gutted cat. I have the RPM catback with no muffler and I am actually overboosting with just that so that's why I'm going external with an EBC.

Basically, you don't NEED a boost controller with a stock wastegate. The chip controls that for you.

Re: Why a boost controller

IMO a good chip is better than any standalone. The standalone won't pull boost if there is a knock condition. Why spend money on something to duplicate a stock capability. Upgrade the wastegate (external on the crossover, or ported stocker), and use the stock ECM's boost control. Chances are that will get you about where you want to be.

Re: Why a boost controller

True, there are many positives to stock boost control. But the way I figure it, the stock chip pulls boost with an overboost condition or severe knock retard. Overboost is solved with a good external/ebc combo and real knock bad enough for that would be audible. At that point you would be keeping your foot out of it and trying to fix the problem. That's just me though. :2cents:
