Why you'll never see a SyTy in StreetTrucks Magazine

Here's some email correspondence I had with Brian McCormick over at StreetTrucks magazine about why out of 39 issues they have not so much as mentioned the turbo trucks...

Hi!

I have been a follower and subscriber to the magazine since the very beginning (I own every issue, if that's enough proof). My jaw usually stays dropped cover to cover from the ingenuity and craftsmanship of some of these trucks. They are absolutely outrageous!

One thing that I noticed, though, is that in not one of your 39 issues is a 1991 GMC Syclone or 1992-93 Typhoon ever featured, pictured, or even mentioned! Granted, most SyTy guys don't hack their trucks to cram a set of 22 inch Boyds underneath, or change the body styling much (heck, you know how much that OEM cladding costs?!?), but the Syclone and Typhoon, in my opinion, are benchmarks in the history of "street trucks." Like I said, appearance wise, most Sys and Tys fall into a relatively thin spectrum (I personally own a black metallic purple flaked 93 Typhoon, which still settles in with the black crowd), but as far as performance , our trucks are hard to beat dollar for dollar.

Looks wise, not ALL of us keep things stock. Not only do we have the 10 Marlboro Syclones and couple of Indy Typhoons, but there are guys who have beautiful paintwork on their trucks. (A couple pictures are attached for you to look at {NOTE: I ATTACHED PICS OF GAVIC'S TY, THAT CRAZY PAINTED BLUE TY AT NATS, AND THE 2 MARLBS STAGING). Wheels, though limited in size choice, often fall to some type of Camaro or Corvette rim, which gives the trucks a completely different personality.

And you want to talk about GO? Even you guys have to give us SyTy people credit. $1000 into a Typhoon can put it into the 12s, a Syclone even faster. New 10 and 11 second trucks are popping up in the community nearly every week, most of which remain completely streetable.

So what I am asking is if the good folks over at StreetTrucks might take an exemplary Syclone or Typhoon into account for a future issue. Maybe you could even consider showing up for our SyTy Nationals next year (most likely in July or August). This year, over 120 trucks attended, which is incredible considering their rarity and essentially internet-only publicity.

To take a look at some pictures from the 2002 SyTy Nationals in Chicago, check out

Pictures of my personal Typhoon, my baby, are at

I appreciate your time in reading this, and let me know if anything pans out. Thanks, and keep up the good work on that magazine!

The reason you don't see any syclones or typhoons is like you mentioned, owners of them don't hook them up sick style like most of our readers. And then there is the fact that there are just too few to begin with along with the fact that a lot of people just hide them in their garages hoping someday to have a gem worth selling to pay off the mortgage. We have nothing against the sys and tys, but unless someone is going to mad pimp one out, its hard to feature a rather stock truck. A performance upgrade could be in order, but other than that even if a company had cosmetic parts for them, who out there is going to actually install the stuff on their ride? Of course, if I had one I would probably cut the crap out of it and make it totally worthless, so I would say it is safer for us not to have one close to the office otherwise it would be doomed. LOL. thanks for your letter. Brian.

Okay guys, you see where you stand, no who's Sy should we get that Escalade front clip on first ;) :fist: HAHA

ya know, thats some total bullshit.... ::shithitfan::

i cant count how many times ive seen trucks/cars featured in magazines because of subtle upgraded mods and just because of overall beautiful quality work in keeping the truck/car mildly original with only a hint of personalized work.

fuck em.

might have to bust out with the sticker that is featured in Gary Shanock's Workmobile:

NO SLOWRIDERS

even GMHTP cries about having to feature sytys...

"black trucks dont show up well in pictures..."

yeah well, last i saw, there was this thing called paint...some owners have done this newly developed concept to their trucks.... then there's that other truck that came in various colors..... wait... its coming to me.... oh yeah..

THE TYPHOON.

Guy was a lucky SOB to get the cover on GMHTP...he wasnt supposed to have it alone, but to share it with another car... the other car didnt make it at the last minute, so GMHTP made do with Guy and the helicopter....

oh well, gotta give them some credit i guess.... they actually do acknowledge the trucks exist and sometimes throw them back into the reader's ride section.

...and by the way, not even talking subtle, think about Steve Gavic's truck! Totally custom paintwork, different rims, obviously upgraded engine, what's not "sick style" about doing all that to a low-production vehicle?!

Thanks for the "plug"...
I dont think many of the magizines want photos of our trucks...

Before I did the flames Hot Rod did a photo shoot at RT66, they were supposed to be featured in an issue.....

It has never been published.....

OH WELL

bdubb

I am teh kingpin!
personally i dont blame them.

nobody really wants to see a stock looking truck in there, doesnt matter what the hell it is.

and they don't really care about speed either.

Fuck that gay ass magazine, our trucks don't need any publicity in "Street Truck Magazine". One of the weakest magazines out. How many times they gonna print the same article about installing cold air intake on truck x.

Anyway if you like custom trucks and shit "Tailgate" blows that magazine away.

They're the ricers of the truck world what do you expect? That they would be smart enough to figure out that a truck can look good and perform? That's obviously too difficult of a concept. I'd definitely agree on Steve G's truck, lowered, crazy paint, nice wheels, modded engine etc...they should quit playa haten and start congratulatin  Jealousy gets you nowhere. If I just wanted a truck to look at I'll hop on the internet, but if I want to go 0 - 60 in 3 seconds I'll hop in my truck. Nuff said...RR
