Would you mig weld this?

Re: Would you mig weld this?

Very good info here from all you guys. I am going to do the coil over swap no doubt. I like your idea Matt and may go ahead and do the same thing. As of now my reinforcement plans were going to be to beef up the shock towers and all around the arm areas. One thing that I thought about though, how far should I go back? If I did say, a few inches back from the cracks, wouldn't the point after that just become another weak spot? This leads me to think maybe go back a couple feet or so.

no issues with the coil-over setup here..

I've seen a-lot weaker frames go through much worse abuse (jeeps and rock crawling) of course that is low speed but i've seen them take quite a bit of abuse.

besides, worse case is you just box the weak parts and add a cross brace.

Totally different arena if you ask me. You aren't asking a fully loaded semi truck to go barreling through turns (even though some do anyway). We are talking about handling and performance. A semi truck is built to drive straight. Anyone anticipating coil overs are going to likely try and get some handling out of it, at least I am. I can see where you are coming from and think you are right to a degree but I don't think that mentality applies in this case.

Now I could be dead wrong here but for some reason I am thinking that the design of our frames/suspension did not really have handling in mind. Seems like more of a space saver to me.

I thought I was tripping. I Pulled the post up to show a friend from class and it was gone. And there I was bragging about all the stuff I learn here and how technical it all is. Boy did I feel stupid.

Good luck with the repair!

Definitely take Geoff up on that one. I would not even think about doing it with your welder. Give me a call when you head up here, I might tag along

Wife has the flu, and I'm fighting trying not to get it. I was actually asleep when you called, and figured you didn't want a call at 5:30AM when I noticed that I missed yours.

Re: Would you mig weld this?

I sat tonight and looked long and hard at the frame of my TY. I noticed something, the places where the other TY cracked were all of the places where the welds weren't complete. In other words, if say the lower bracketry for the lower control arm were welded to the frame, the weld only went about an inch and then another inch at the end of the bracket. Not sure that makes sense. So what I have done for right now, is I completed the welds. I am debating leaving it like this. I put some fat beads down and it looks pretty damn good. I also took the time to weld the opposite sides of pieces that were only welded on one side. Is this a waste of time over reinforcing the frame? It's not too late, I can still do that.

I did that to mine too.. I actual ground most of the hideous factory weld out so that I could lay one continuous bead and make it look nice.
