WTF leaking gear fluid *pics*

What ever it takes!!
Woke up to find a puddle of gear oil under the rear driver's side tire...at first I thought it was brake fluid.
Is this an easy fix?

Axle seals. Have to take the axle out but not that bad of a repair good time to service the rear axle too(since you will have to take the rear cover off)

X2 on the axle seals. As mentioned, it would be a good time to replace both of them while you're in there. Just remember to not rotate the carrier assembly while the axles are out, otherwise it gets difficult to realign the spider gears. IMO, it would also be a good idea to replace the shoes on both sides as well, since there is no 100% way to remove oil/grease from brake linings. Have the drums machined to go with it, and the rear end will be set for a long time  good luck!

Lots of great suggestions, guys.

In the pic it appears that the seal has come out of the housing. No wonder there's a puddle of oil. I've never seen this happen before (at least on a rear axle). I think you're going to find some damage other than just a seal. Like the axle and the bearing as well.

The bearings are a bitch, if not impossible, to get out without the proper puller. You'll have to borrow or rent one. If the axle is deeply grooved, it will have to be replaced. "Axle Saver" bearings won't work on a 91/92 because of the ABS tone rings. There's not enough clearance.

Take it apart in a location where it can remain for a few days. You're going to have to find parts and tools. I predict you won't fix this in an afternoon. It's going to take you awhile.

if the seals blew off, and you find nothing really odd, you might check the breather on it

Going to post some more pics tonight...When I pulled the axle out the bearing and seal came with it.
As far as wear on the axle I can still feel a little more girth where the seal and bearing rides.

The orange seal is a "proud seal" the passenger side is green...looks like the previous owner(s) replaced it before. I'm assuming the stock seals are green.

Well so much for it being tough to remove the bearing without tools. But, you've got a problem.

The bearing should not have come out with the axle. It should have REALLY been 'in there'. You may be able to peen the ID of the axle tube to hold the new bearing, but this is risky. It may not work. Or not for long.

Clean and inspect everything. Post some up-close pics of the axle and old bearing O.D. I'd like to see if I can see a cause for the failure.

If you can patch it for now, I have a good used 91 axle housing and axles and can bring them to you in January on my way to Florida for a more permanent repair. Keep us posted on what you come up with.

I got the axles, new bearings & seals back into place. Should wrap it all up tomorrow in time for turkey. Going to install royal purple gear oil...heard it was gooder 8P.

On that last picture...looks like the outside of the bearing was wearing in. Must of happen from the original bearing cause the replacement bearing looked good. Could explain why it came out. Better start looking for an 8.5".

How many bottles of gear oil go into the rear?

My manual is useless as usual.

Re: WTF leaking gear fluid *pics*

I used about 2. One full bottle and most of the second, I think. It was right below the fill plug when I finished. I just stuck my pinky in there to check the level.
