Well i had good news my motor ran, and it sounded great.....well untill is dropped the #1 Cylinder exhaust valve in my brand new motor.

Its under warranty but i dont know what they will pay for...parts and labor, only labor? im ****ed now, damn money pit. Oh well ill post some pics up when the head comes off. I can only imagine whats done in there.

BTW, whats a good valve to go with on Vortec's. they are stock size right now but may upgrade in size.

Yikes!

That doesn't sound like its going to be cheap or fun!

Sorry to hear your luck hasn't gotten any better since owning the Sy.
Just keep your chin up and keep chipping away at it.
eventually it will cave!

Pics of the heads when you open the motor for sure!

Re: Yeah! my motor ran

Leave the stock size valves in the Vortecs ! Many here had there Vortecs crack due to larger valves.

I have 2.02/1.5 manley racing valves, that's what the shop that did my headwork went with

Re: Yeah! my motor ran

Ed Hale of Ca. but they were stock valves:roll::oops:i should have known better than to use anything stock. the rest of the heads are race ported and so on.

Weird thing is my rockers are acting strange. I pulled the exhaust rocker on the #1 and #3. Both roller tips will spin freely one direction(same direction) but really dont want to spin the other way without the feeling like there is grit in them. one way smooth, other very hard to spin if it will at all, if that makes sense. I called RPM and they said their new in box dont have that problem. Maybe that was the initial problem, i dunno.

What degree locks were used on the valves? Also how big of cam do you have in there, and were the springs correct for the lift? Did they coil bind or smash the oil seals?

Re: Yeah! my motor ran

It was a 422 comp cam kit from RPM. They sold me everything, except the heads. those came off my budies 98 zr2 blazer that ran but he wrecked. I dont know the degree of the locks though. what should they be, or not be?

Re: Yeah! my motor ran

Well IMHO you shouldn't have just swapped the heads. Were they set up for that cam by your builder? What does "and so on" mean? Especially correct springs (checking installed height) and retainers/locks as specified on the cam card. Also correct preload on the lifters could be an item.

Re: Yeah! my motor ran

RPM sold it to me as a kit for the vortec's. i told my builder there would prob be some modding to the head to get them to fit. He had RPM's number if they had ?'s and mine too. Even if it needed to machine into the head for the spring to fit in there properly, should not be a problem. I personally know the guy who built the heads at Ed Hale, he knows his stuff, after all he is the shop foreman. But people make mistakes so anything could be the problem.

This was a "kit" as it was sold to me. everything came as one package. im not blaming RPM or Ed Hale( even though they are gonna fix it for free). My guess is it was not a good valve. it may have held for stock purposes but as soon as heavier springs and a bigger cam were introduced it snapped. im replacing all of the valve springs asap before anything else happens.

RPM knew exactly what my build was, i sat down on the phone with mike so there would be no confusion so i doubt i got bad parts. just owned a bad valve.

My big question is the rockers now. could bound roller-tips have caused this? i dont see how it could but hey, anything is possible. i dont know, thats why i had someone else build it. Im learning these trucks as fast as i can, but they are harder to figure out than women some times, lol.

Re: Yeah! my motor ran

OK, had me wondering if the heads were "built" as opposed to just "swapped."

BTW I didn't use Manly valves in mine. My guy used these:

And I'm talking a builder with tones of experience with race motors.

Re: Yeah! my motor ran

sounds good, im all for saving money while having just as good a part

Well good news. no bad piston damage, just some little dents, and no cylinder damage at all. No head damage either.

Comp cams is willing to replace the rockers but the guy seemed shady a bit. Would not answer my questions directly. I asked if the stuck roller tips could cause this and he responded with the reasons valves break.

So to make a long story shorter, im going to take the heads in to make sure the springs wont be at bind. if the case is that they are at bind when the rocker comes down, i will know who is at fault. If not, then it was a bad valve.

Any way it goes someone will pay for valves(prob me), and someone will pay for gaskets(prob builder, and someone will pay for the labor to pull it all apart and have it put back together(def me:() Any way you shake it , it will cost me more money and im not happy.

I will post pics up in a little bit

Re: Yeah! my motor ran

Ok, update, sending the heads back to builder and he will replace my gaskets (free of charge), buy me new swirl polished stainless valves(free of charge), and completely go through the heads to make sure nothing is wrong without costing me anything. Now that is a good builder, hell those were my valves that were stock that i supplied. He does not care, just wants me happy. i just have to bring them to him.:tup::tup:
