Your Experience Good and/or bad with your Syclone

I have heard varying opinions here.

I know that the engine will pretty much go to hell if you allow it to detonate.

I also know that the transmission doesn't hold up to the power and torque that the motor is putting out, especially if you start to beef up the motor.

Basically I'm looking for a hotrod (Read Toy), something that I can drive a couple of times a week (at the most), enjoy and tinker with, but I dont want to have a vehicle that is a total pain in the ass.

I guess what my question is: What has been your experience good/bad with your syclone or typhoon and was it worth it to you.

I am considering purchasing one of these trucks or a TTA, but I do like the looks of the truck better (just like the fact that the TTA is more reliable out of the box).

Also are there aftermarket parts available that will allow you to fix the problems (A.K.A. is there a way to put a th400 into a syclone or aftermarket parts that you can rebuild the motor with to make it bulletproof (or close))

Sorry for the long post,
And Thanks in advance,
Sean

what do you mean by worth it? good investment, they are not...fun, they can be...reliable, not as reliable as a TTA...and they will keep you busy if you drive them...different, they are...i like them because i really wanted one badly when they were in production, but i couldn't have one...same with gn's...i have one in the garage and have had a few more...but i was 16 yrs. old when i first got a ride in one...i knew i must have one someday...i hope you get the idea ...

Life is beter at 25 PSI
yea it's been a pretty good first year and 3 months with my ty

i drive mine daily and will say that once you start modding it, expense goes up, gas mileage goes down, and reliability gets better  (mainly due to the inherent non-reliable nature of the stock truck's 12 year old parts)

i'd say it's still worth it. kinda an investment that won't lose value over the years. and it's a blast to drive

I mean has the enjoyment that you got out of it worth the pain in the butt that it can be sometimes/isnt' sometimes.

I think that if you're a hard-core "tinkerer" who likes to beef up motors with good internals and hot rod around probably get the Syclone. A TTA and a Sy are probably going to run you about the same price to do a nice build on. However:

[pro TTA] There's way more support for parts/advice/recipes for the TTA...

[pro Sy] Limited engine room in the TTA (look at the stock downpipe)

[pro TTA] You'll blow headgaskets instead of cranks...

[pro Sy] It's an AWD street demon :D

Shoot smeagol a PM, I know he's had both...

Mine has been worth every penny. As an added bonus,it's completely invisible to the police.

Sy/Ty's ROCK! It's a package deal. You get something rare, fun to drive, a KILLER street machine, sleeper, like Jimmy said- cops don't see it unless you make it obvious. Sure, they do break, big deal, fix it. Not like anything you buy and modify and race isn't gonna break parts.

Well worth the time and money. Especially when some dude in a viper laughs at you then you hand him his ass like there's no tomorrow when you're street racing infront of a big group of people.

I totally agree here.. with a cowl hood, zr1 wheels and a loud ass exhoust.. I've had no issues with police in the sy can't say the same for my mustang.. cops every second on my ass etc..

I'd have to say that owning my dream car has been a great experiance. Yes they break if driven hard or sometime even not hard at all but every performance car out there has it's weaknesses and besides it gives you reason to upgrade :D

Plus these are totally unlike every other sports car which is what I like.. I didn't want something that everyone else has.. not that everyone has a TTA that is but have you ever been in a sy? AWD = Smile

SYCOTIC
Once you feel the launch, i don't care how long it's been down, it's totally worth it. Yes they're a large PITA, but the payoffs outweigh the misfortunes if you stick to it. Plus, you get to meet a great bunch of wrench heads!

I have two sys and two of my best friends had TTA's. Everybody talks about the sy's launch. Don't get me wrong, its bad ass, but have any of you lauched a TTA hard? Its probably one of the hardest launching street 2 wd cars ever made. One of the guys I know (Bill Ragland, you can see his 8sec. T-type in the atr catslog) works on a TTA out here for a client of his, and man does that thing rock! If I had it my way, I'd own both. Every body would want to race you in the TTA because it looks fast, but you could tell em they don't diserve to race you in that, you'll just go home and get your truck

Big in the rear
Hell, i got my truck for $8200, i now have about 12K more in it, and it still runs like piss. Im sure i will put another 10-20K in it before its the way i want it. (or i will just buy a nicer one) All that cost gets you something, The baddest ass truck ever made.

You could get a bad ass motor that will take a lot for 4K. Then spend a lot (2-3K) on a hardcore 700R4 to handle it or got with the 400, i think you would end up spending about the same but the 400 will last atleast. Factor in replacing all the worn out stuff on the truck $500-2K depending on miles and shape its in. And you have your self a great fast DD or race truck.

Always something to fix, even after $15K in mods  Fun truck, but it's definitely a love/hate relationship. Will never sell her though...never.

Forced to by choice
I know I've heard this before on this site, if you're buying it for it not to brake, dont buy it. I'm buying mine this month, and I'm not gonna baby it always. Put it this way, I've never seen a sy/ty in person, but ever sense I was about 8 I've wanted a sy, mostly because it holds a "name" in your head, kinda like when you ask someone why a Camaro SS over a Z28. 8)

The reasons I like the Syclone:

1)Its black
2)Its a small pickup (Love small pickups v. Large pickups)
3)Its got a turbo (If its got a turbo it has to be good/better right?)
4)Looks great
5)Sleeper

The reasons I like the TTA:

1)Its got a turbo
2)Decent reliability
3)Looks good
4)They made a few less then the Syclones

Things against the TTA:
1)Its white (Dislike the color white on any car, but could always be painted different color)
2)T-Tops (Never been a big fan of these)

Another reason I like the Syclone over the TTA is because when I get my dream car (68 z/28 camaro numbers matching), I'll have a bad Truck and a bad Car.

I have been through alot with my Ty, mostly bad. Been good to me lately though.
But I have always wanted one (Sy or Ty) since they were made.
I will keep mine for a long as I can see.

Also I think there were a few hard top TTA produced.
