Z06 Vette - A win and a loss

OK, this one really got the juices flowing. Coming down San Tomas Southbound this evening at the light before Hamilton, I see a silver Z06 Vette up ahead. My eyes lit up, so I got up next to him and lined up at the light. Pretty sure he was gonna go so I started boosting on the cross-light. Light goes green and I launch super hard, boost controller is set to 17psi, air outside is ice cold. I looked in the mirror and Vette man's headlights are bobbing up and down as he's rowing through the gears playing catch up. I'm laughing as he's trying to catch up and he never does. I shut it down around 90mph and he races up right behind me at the next light. So now he's got a big hard-on for me and I knew he'd swing around me to show me what the LS6 can do. I just left the light nice and easy and at 45mph I punched it and so did he. He swings to the middle lane and gets right next to me...we stay dead even up to about 90mph when he starts walking. I kept my foot in it up until I ran out of revs in 3rd, must have been about 120mph...damn those Vettes are fast on the top end

I got up next to him at the Highway 17 light and he wouldn't roll the window down and took a quick left. I was gonna' ask him if we could go one more time from a dig, but I guess he didn't want any more, ha ha. So Sy owns Z06 from the light and Vette owns Sy from a roll...big surprise. I did a few more high-psi boosted launches tonight for kicks and I'm getting major rear axle hop. These 35-series tires aren't helping things, traction bars will be coming soon.

Sy #434 is running like a raped F'in ape now. Phil Long is da man  This chip is so sick, I'm in heaven. The truck roasts all 4 tires with a boosted launch on pump 91 gas at only 17psi. Total annihilation of a modded WRX yesterday and yes, the Z06 was the 405HP model. Gotta tune the Razor kit so I can bump the boost up to 18psi :) Will be going to the track soon with my buddy who has a C6 manual Vette to get some baseline times. I'm confident it's gonna' be low 12's...perhaps high 11's on high octane and 20psi. We'll see.

Man those zo6's are everywhere around my area, and me without a Sy to do anything about it.
Man I saw your pics from your website, nice looking truck, and looks good under the hood, I thought with that turbo you may of actually hung with him on the roll. Are you running stock heads, and cam?

From the 45-50mph punch, we were dead even until at least 90mph, then he started walking away quickly. My truck ran out of revs in 3rd. I shifted to OD, but I don't remember it going into 4th. Need to do some test WOT runs to see if I'm running out of RPM's or what. Motor is bone stock, 71K original miles, doesn't blow any smoke, idles like a Lexus. It's had nothing but Mobil 1 oil since new. I did pull the intake, cleaned everything, and replaced the gaskets when I had it all apart just for good measure. The lifter valley was so clean you could eat off it. Here are some pics:

Again, I was only running 17psi, which is as high as I will run on 91 crap fuel. AFR is 11.6 to 12.1 at WOT, depending on what setting I use on the Phil Long chip. When I datalogged with those settings, I was only getting 1 or 2 degrees KR here and there, which makes me a happy guy since this motor used to knock like crazy, even at part throttle. Something fixed the knock issues, I'm pretty sure the ITS wastegate and EBC have something to do with that. I did some datalogging with the chip set on the higher ignition advance settings (17 vs. 15) and it felt even stronger, but I don't want to risk blowing it and will save those settings for the high-octane fuel. I do know my truck felt completely different when I would go from 17psi to 20psi using the old Ultimate chip and stock turbo - I mean it was like a shot of nitrous. I can't imagine how crazy fast this thing is going to be with 20+ psi and the chip set to the more aggressive timing settings  I've taken my GF and a bunch of other people for rides and they just start laughing when I punch it. I like nailing it in the corners and drifting the truck sideways...great fun.

Anyway, a 412 or 422 cam and ported/polished Vortec heads and intake will be next, along with some 1.5 rockers. I'm really happy with the way it's running now, though, so that won't be for a while.

Dean - how's the Sy running? Are you prowling the streets with it yet? How did the SMOG check go?

You know I'm going to pay for my smog check this sat, I'll pass.. that's not a problem, this time. No it's not running yet, motor is getting a custom cam installed and removing the 412 cam. Maybe I'll have an update in two weeks, I can never tell any more. But the wheels are turning on this project.

Hmm you know I ran out of revs on the freeway years ago, running a rice rocket, my truck wouldn't shift into OD, I found out it needed a new part/kit for the transmission (700r4) to remedy this common problem on high mileage 700's. Maybe it's the problem you having? I never got to install it before, and now the 4l80e is in the sy, so I never got to see first hand if it would solve the issue. But one of the long time tranny guru's from way back garanteed that it would solve my not shifting into OD at WOT problem. I don't know what the kit is called but I still have it here, damn I have to send it to the guy that bought my tranny... I'm so damn forgetfull at times, ugh.
I cand send a pic of the kit if that helps.

I dunno, I need to do some more WOT runs to find out if there is, in fact, a problem. How come you're pulling the 412 cam? Are you going to ditch the clutch fan and go with electrics? Looks like you have the best of everything on your Sy - I'm thinking 10's no problem with that setup ;) Get some video footage of that baby at the track or laying smack down on the street

412 is comming out in favor of a custom cam for the brodix heads that flow alot more. 412 is just a bit to mild maybe for these hi flowing heads. 412 is also comming out to test a theory of a issue were having at the moment. Maybe low 10s with the new cam? I'm sure my truck will be still down at RPM durring Mikes xmas get together, take a look if you make it out this way.

Hey Jeremy,

On my first build of my typhoon stock heads, stock intake, te44 turbo and the 412 cam my truck was running those ZO6's and LS! off the road you just need more top end my truck was the same stock just couldn't hold those guys off up top. But also look into custom ground cam these cams everyone has are made for natural aspirated notors not turbo my new motor now with new custom cam, vortec heads, gt35r dual ball bearing, is making over 600 hp and 630 ft lbs at only 15 psi.

Have fun out there.
Thanks Ralph
