ZQ8 steering box

Anyone have a link to swap out the stock steering box for the ZQ8 unit? I've seen it on here before, but couldn't find anything through search. Thanks.

Re: ZQ8 steering box

its a direct swap, just unbolt the stock box and bolt up the ZQ8 box, and reinstall the steering shaft. Id install a new pitman arm before you install the new box thought, as it will be easier that way.

All you have to do is remove the 2wd pitman arm from the ZQ8 box and install a new 4wd pitman arm. There is a special puller you need to get it off, and you can rent them at autozone. Id makes it alot easier if you have an impact gun and air compressor also.

Re: ZQ8 steering box

This might help.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then drain the
charge air cooling system.
2. Loosen the clamps, then disconnect the hoses from the
charge air cooler.
3. Remove the bolts attaching the charge air cooler to the
mounting bracket, then remove the cooler from the engine.
4. Position a fluid catch pan under the power steering gear.
5. Disconnect the feed and return fluid hoses from the
steering gear. Immediately cap or plug all openings to prevent
system contamination or excessive fluid loss.
..Be sure to plug the pressure hoses and the openings of
the power steering pump to keep dirt out of the system.
6. Remove the intermediate shaft-to-steering gear bolt.
Matchmark the intermediate shaft-to-power steering gear and
separate the shaft from the gear.
7. Matchmark and remove the pitman arm from the gear
pitman shaft. For details, please refer to the procedure earlier
in this section.
8. Remove the power steering gear-to-frame bolts and
washers, then carefully remove the steering gear from the
vehicle.
To install:
9. Position the steering gear to the vehicle and secure by
finger-tightening the fasteners. For some late model vehicles,
the pitman arm must be connected to the gear while it is still
removed from the vehicle or while it is partially installed and
lowered for access. If necessary, align and install the pitman
arm to the shaft at this time.
10. Torque the power steering gear-to-frame bolts to 55 ft.
Ibs. (75 Nm).
11. Align and install the intermediate shaft to the power
steering, then secure using the pinch bolt.
12. If equipped, install the shield over the intermediate shaft
lower coupling. "
13. Remove the caps, then connect the feed and return
hoses to the power steering gear. Refill the pump reservoir.
14. Position the charge air cooler to the mounting bracket,
then secure using the retaining bolts.
15. Install the hoses to the charge air cooler and secure
using the clamps.
16. Connect the negative battery cable, then properly refill
the charge air cooling system. For details, please refer to Sec-
tion 1 of this manual.

With the charge air cooler out and the front drivers side tire off it was pretty easy.

Does anyone know the difference lock to lock??

I believe the ZQ8 box is almost a turn and a half quicker than the stock box. My stock box is like 3 3/4 turns lock to lock or there abouts and the ZQ8 box is like 2.5 turns lock to lock i believe.

You can feel the differance for sure. 140 bucks well spent IMO.

Re: ZQ8 steering box

Just purchased a zq8 box. It has the old part #. It's from 2000. It's still not in the truck yet but noticed it needs 3 turns. I checked the old one. Guess what. 3 turns.
This was all performed with the box out of the truck. Has anyone had this problem?

Re: ZQ8 steering box

mine was the same way and i can't explain why. you can check with the gurus (if you haven't pulled the stickers off yet) to see if it's a z box but it probably is. when you drive it you will feel the difference.

is there an explanation for this? i'm seeing the same thing with mine, purchased from spooldup. 3 turns lock to lock on both units.

Are there different ZQ8 boxes? Are the boxes identifiable by the cases? Should i expect the box to act differently when installed?

Re: ZQ8 steering box

i never found any info to explain my situation. i posted pics of my original unit for 'spooldup' to look at and he says my orignal unit is definitely 'not' a ZQ8.

Never mind. Chevy Extreme 99-03

The Xtreme was created to highlight the new ZQ8 suspension, but the ZQ8 was an option before 99 in the SS package as well as on a standard truck. Try 96 1/2 and newer for ZQ8. 94-96 S10 SSs did NOT have the ZQ8.
