So a buddy of mine and his room mate came over this evening to help get some of my truck together. I am missing the grommet for my wiper motor and couldn't locate one so we went to eat instead. The room mate was driving a pretty nice Sti with some mods done. Something like a stage II bottom end, injectors, tune and whatever else it had. Stock turbo he thinks on 20psi. We took it to go get a grommet and I have to say the car felt real strong even though he wasn't smashing it. So he says he wants to race the Ty and see what happens. I go to my wife's work to pick it up and we went and caught a light.

I launched with about 7psi and got a little wheel spin but not enough to affect my launch. I got I would say a solid 4-5 cars on him out of the hole. I could tell he didn't really know how to launch it yet. Especially since he already had told me that:lol: At about 75 we were approaching other cars FAST. I had to hit the brakes and got a little fish tail, never experienced that before in a TY.

So after we ate, I was on my way home and what happens? I get stuck at another light with this guy. So it went pretty much the same only this time we took it up higher. I was going 85 when he passed me and let off about 90. It sucked but hey, it was fun. Second race was up hill btw.

Yeah stock STIs are pretty weak, I take em down with my Z28 all the time and my Z28 is stock. However a modded one spanked me a couple months ago. So watch out.

You have to be utterly vicious and very good to be able to launch an STI. The little 2.5 doesn't bring a lot of torque, so you have to be dead nuts on the launch. Too little r's and it bogs, to many R's and something slips, clutch, tires, ..etc. I think I have launched mine "well" 1. It took me dialing the power through the diff mostly to the rear to induce a little tire slip. Haven't been able to repeat it.

Curious about the 2011 WRX...I've heard their 0-60 times are almost a full tick faster than STI's but begin to fade above 80?? The 2011 WRX is a car I've been interested in for a while now...no idea what mods the engine could handle.

Sounds like some fun. Subaru's are great cars. Been around that scene for a little while. A good friend of mine has a bug-eyed WRX with a JDM swap, some other minor mods and turbo upgrade. Put down well over 350 wheel horse power. He knows how to launch and drive well, I'm thinking he was in the low low 12s with it. Not bad for 350 ponies.

Oh I've mentioned them. In 2005, I got 5 tickets in that summer. In 2000-2001, I got like 12 and lost my license. There are PLENTY of cops here. I tend to watch what I do and when I do it these days though. In 08, I got a drag racing ticket and was able to get it plead down to a two point unsafe with the city attorney. Trust me, they know who I am.

When my wife stop at Loaf n Jug in the morning on her way to work I guess there are always these cops there. They asked her about her Ty one day and it wasn't long before they smiled when she told them I have "the black one". Last year when I got it running I drove by two cops, maiden voyage and all and they jump in the car and start following me. It sucks but what can you do?

Good thing you don't live in San Diego, they'll crush your car.

I'm not going anywhere. For one I don't really go "cruise" much if at all anymore which was mainly how I accumulated all of my tickets. Like in San Diego, we have a Drag Net unit here that usually picks a Friday or Saturday night during the summer to go out in plain clothes and normal cars, they hide in bushes and all kinds of weird things. Most of the racing I will do these days is when I am on my way somewhere or what ever. I also give thought to what could be laying up ahead and either engage or don't. I know my town so I try to keep it "safe", as far as safe goes that is.

Good point, the STi is just in that range to have enough power to break drivetrain components but not quiet enough power to break the wheels loose with a good hard launch, so trying to launch a stock one is dicey. Still, until you try to hit 500whp they can be alot of fun.

Re: Beat by STi

Thats interesting that you got beat on the top end. My friends STI seems to fall off top end.
Street racing is not safe, but people are kidding themselves saying they dont race on the street. Anyone that owns this type of vehicle is from the same mold as Tytilidie. If some dude in a camaro with exhaust is revving his engine at you when your both at a stop light and your in a sy/ty; I would bet 9 out of 10 times your going to show him whats up. If you dont have that urge then you need to see a doctor. Not saying if you dont race you need to see a doctor but you know deep down you want to show that guy whats up. Not promoting street racing.
