this has been an on going project for about 10 months or so now. we finally got the turbo on and some tuning done.

the build is a built low compression 2000 4.3l with port and polished vortec heads. we used syty manifolds and a mpt70 turbo. we installed a marine intake with 60# injectors. also swaped the old style pcm for a 0411 pcm for 3bar tuning. we are currently runing 6psi. our goal is 15-20psi with meth. here are a ton of pics. i will try and label them as i go. remember this was a budget build, so we got things where we could. the marine manifold was only 199 on ebay. i took some pics of the way i installed it too.

we used the stock airbox tube to adapt to the manifold the stock thing would not stay on for anything

left over crap!!

this is the wonderful boost gauge and wideband display. this is not its final spot we are doing things as money comes in.
018.jpg

this one we installed the upper radiator hard line and thermostat. we did not have to modify anything here just installed it like stock.

this one is the heater core hose off the manifold with out having to drill or tap anything.
020.jpg

this one goes to the water pump itself. there was a plug here we just removed it and srewed in an adapter from advanced.
022.jpg

now this is not the final product he is going to clean some of the stuff up and relocate a few small part. like the boost gauge what not. with just 6psi it pulls hard its actually kind of amazing. its pretty cool. some of the charge pipes are from a sts kit. others came with the IC. the down pipe and exhaust is left over parts from here and there. turbo came from kbracing. the wastegate is from a used sts kit.

Re: budget build turbo 4.3l silverado

it's alive, nice.

oh its alive for sure. i'm impressed with it so far. its out of fuel by 4000rpm due to stock fuel pump (new one on order). even though we had to short shift we raced a friends 04 camed 5.3l. its got long tube headers with dual 3" exhaust and a yank tt3000. when we took of the auto 5.3l took us as the 4.3l has a stick shift. soon as boost (6psi) rolled in we pull right up to him. then we short shifted and he walked away until boost rolled in again and we started pulling him back in. it pulls like crazy for sure!

I couldn't tell it was budget at all, considering you used expensive schedule 40 PVC :p

Just ribbing you. I like seeing budget projects, I'm interested to see your progress.

at least we did use the thick stuff, lol. right now we are waiting on a fuel pump and a clutch. we were racing a buddies crew cab dodge hemi with longer tube headers intake dual exhaust and a tune. we were short shifting around 4500 rpm due to fuel pump but still walking past him. then he tried to hit third and it made some bad noises and would not go into gear. he shut it down and it would go into gear but with it started it would not and there was a horrible noise. so he started it with the shifter in gear and was able to drive. a few minuted later there was some clunks and clinks and then all the noise went away and was able to shift again. morrale of the story here is at 6psi its sick.

hopefully after the first of the month we will get some new track times on this truck and my tahoe. and all the other trucks we have been building over the past few months.

Re: budget build turbo 4.3l silverado

This is pretty cool. I believe that truck has a NV3500 5 speed stock? If so good luck finding another one unless you buy a reman. I spent 6 months trying to find one for my 4.3 5 speed sonoma.

We have a 01 Silverado 4.3 (see sig pic of Wife's truck). We really love that truck, but it is underpowered for its size. The 4.3 does make enough torque to spin the tires a little if you stomp it from a light, but then its all over. Its completely stock though. I had thought about a turbo before, but i think we are just going to find a 6.0 to drop in it so we can use it to tow a trailer (with the Sy on it  )

well we found a clutch for it. very few people make a good one. but i found one that is suppose to be good to 750ftlb of torque at the flywheel. this thing spins tires easy. he can left off the clutch at idle and stomp it, it will just take off then a second later the turbo comes in and lights the tires up. from what i gather though if we go from the stock nv3500 to a LT1 style t56 we won't have to change anything. if anything maybe just the clutch plate itself. which is what he wants to do later on anyway. i could be wrong here but that's what the guy made it sound like on the phone.

Check on some of the S-Series websites. Those guys have documented the T56 behind a 4.3 many times over. Typically they use a 6spd from behind an LT1, use the LT1 flywheel/clutch assy, drill/tap a hole in the block for a new starter bolt, and then have to adapt the fittings on the clutch hydraulics to work. Also the cross member has to be modded to fit, and the floor pan cut to accommodate the new shifter location. It's not 100% bolt in, but pretty close as compared to the turbo setup you have on there now

Yea the t56 isnt a bolt in, but it would be much stronger than the stock 5 speed.

How much do you think you have invested in the turbo install up to now?

Re: budget build turbo 4.3l silverado

we knew about it not being a direct replacement and the shifter is further back. i know on the v8 trucks using the t56's they use the truck slave and master cylinder. either way it will be awhile i'm sure before it happens.

i'll have to ask him how much is in it. its not too bad but the motor is fully built besides stock cank and stock 2bolt mains. other than that nothing is stock. heads were worked over and have the comp 918 springs like the ls motors use. has the comp 224/224 525/525lift with a 110lsa. well the rocker arms are stock forgot about that. its got the marine intake manifold on it. i took some pics of how to install it with out the whole drilling and tapping thing. wasn't hard just had to use some brain power was all. turbo was about $600 itself. the ebay intercooler and piping with crap BOV was 250ish. syty manifolds were like $300 from here. the deka 60# injectors were 280ish. then $20 for the pigtails. $75 for the new computer to be able to run 3bar cause the old 4 plug crap computer wouldn't do it. we had some random parts like exhaust parts lying around so the down pipe was free i just had to make it.

we found the eagle h beam rods for a great price from a shading looking online site so we had summit racing price match it. so the rods were like 250 or 300. pistons with pins were like 350 or so and then rings 150 i think. its been awhile since he bought all the stuff. heads with P/P and 3 angle valve job were $300. marine intake was $199.00. found that one as a fat finger i think. the same place had them all as $499 and that one was $199. so i think the 1 being below the 4 helped us out there. if you want i'll get other prices. there are alot of little crap here and there. like oil feed and return and vacuum lines and fittings............
