Re: C3 all wheel drive corvette coming together...

i've got a million pictures from the very beginning. i just have to load them on my computer and i'll put them up. i will tell you this... if this job paid 10 cents an hour for all the work and welding thats been done someone would be a millionaire. basically... you take a frame, cut it in half, and then build a brand new one trying to figure out how to get the body to fit when it's done and making sure you can fit in when all the bolts are done remembering all the time that this thing is gonna put a lot of stress on things and be very very fast so it has to be right. those loops under the driver are there for a reason... not much room between your butt and a lot of moving parts...

i'll get them up. just have to start downloading discs

Wow. With all of that work going into it, it almost would've been easier to make a tube frame :2cents:

It took me a while to realize the rusty frame is a 4x4 frame. What I don't understand is why they used a solid rear axle with coilovers vs keeping the independent rear? I think their is enough parts to beef up that rear end especially with 35% of the power to the front.

from someone who has broken a bunch of vette IRS rearends it gets tiring trying to find parts that will hold up. there just aren't that many around. everyone will tell you ''no problem.. it'll hold up...'' and then bang it breaks again. they were never made to take big power. you can brace the rearend, try to find billet axles (which i have) and all the other stuff, but if you make any real power they always break. especially with a standard shift and slicks for traction. the whole thing comes down to power. if you make much the IRS will almost always break if you run it hard.

So it like the average 700r4 transmission builder, "We have a Corvette that has (plug in number) HP and it holds up with no problem." :)

I am not up on the C2/C3 Corvette rear suspensions, but I know of a few 9 Sec C4's using the Dana 44 IRS (with upgrades) so I guess I figured that it would the same.

I was gonna say that myself. Have you had rear half shaft problems? There was a place in Florida that was making larger half shafts that looked pretty sweet. Im sure I could dig up thier info somewhere.

Re: C3 all wheel drive corvette coming together...

i can't remember the guys name in florida that we bought a set of "forged'' parts from... they lasted about 7 inches... broke both of them completely in half. nothin but regular stuff heat treated. guy was a total rip off. he says there must have been a mistake in shipping so send them back so we can inspect them. so we do and next thing is there was nothing wrong with them. ask for them back and surprisingly they can't find them. they did manage to find and keep the many hundreds of dollars they swindled us out of though. marvelous ain't some people. anybody interested in buying forged parts for vettes from florida email me and i'll try to come up with the name of the guy so you don't waste your money. we ran 11 flat at 140 mph and broke the sucker all the time. and it was a long way from stock and we kept hearing from the people who sell parts... ''i never heard of anything like that before...'' yea right.. the IRS just isn't up to the job if you want to run 11 or faster. but anyone who want to be a pioneer and figure out how go ahead and be my guest and let me know how you did better than i did. we had a special brace system made that was supposed to help and all the forged parts that could be had and some that aren't even made anymore.

being a ''pioneer'' get to be expensive though... :) if ya wanna dragrace get a straight axle...
