Need advice about this Ty

Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum and have never had a ty or sy before but have loved them since they came out. I'd love some exerienced ty owners advice on this, heres the deal, i should have come here earlier but here it goes anyways. I'm looking to buy this Typhoon tomorrow. Its a 1992 and has 58k original miles. doesnt have the roof rack (or a sunroof but i dont know if that was an option). Its an Arizona/California truck, two owners. i checked it out, the cladding seems straight and the body as well. the cladding does feel loose in some spots like a rivet or clip is missing (i've heard thats a cheap out by GMC). The carfax comes up clean except California DMV (they're idiots I know from experience) issued title in 2000 without actual mileage reported, therefore carfax gives an odometer alert. the mileage reporting on the carfax covers incremements leading up to the title without mileage and continues as regular (i.e. first reporting 8k miles, few years later 15k miles, few years later 22k miles, few years later 30k, few years later 52k and title iussued without mileage, then a year later another reporting 54k miles and so on) I theorize that whomever was registering it in california didnt have the actual mileage on them and didnt care to get it not thinking it could flaw the carfax report. Any thoughts on that? The price is right and I've wanted one since I was 16 and they were brand new. Thanks for any replies.

sounds like a pretty decient truck there . if i were u , i'd read up on some of the important reliability mods and issues with these trucks . hint's and explanations can be found and searched on @ syty.org , sportmachines ,and ofcorse here . read ,read , read , thats my advise . sunroofs were an added option at some of the gmc dealerships at time of purchase . usally done by outside vendors and such . good luck !

Welcome and where are you located? If you can get a current owner to go with you it may help.

Good Suggestion. I'm in Seattle, WA. Any Typhoon (or Syclone) owners in or around the Seattle, Lynnwood Or Everett area, hell even owners in Bellevue, Kirkland or the east side. I'd love if a current owner would go with me to check it out before I buy it.

Have someone who knows these trucks check it out for you. Now that you've seen the cosmetic stuff, you need someone who can pinpoint problems with engine, suspension, boost, etc. Even run a datamaster on it.

Tell us where you're at and I betchya someone from here will volunteer. Don't buy it without doing this...this is not a Camry you're buying.

Good luck.

Edit: Posting at the same time. Def. a few people in Seattle area.

I am in Seattle so if anyone is near, hit me up, I'd love to have a current owner go with me.

Thanks Sy2455, that buyers guide is good to have.

first off welcome. with these trucks its hit or miss. Hard to tell what you are getting. Even an experence syty'er might miss a few things. These are fun trucks but have their problems and you normaly have to spend time under the hood. With that said they are great to drive and enjoy. Like was stated before, its no toyota. Takes a special type of person to own these trucks. If its what you want, get it. We are always here to help. I was welcomed with open arms last year and this is by far the most helpfull site on the net. L8, Gary

Re: Need advice about this Ty

This would not be my daily driver, I have a toyota truck for that (and that one is a toyota hahaha). I also have some mechanic experience, not with turbos though. Mainly I just would like to know that Im not buying a total lemon (in the typhoon world) and getting my monies worth. I know that these trucks are not reliablity trucks. I enjoy working under the hood staying ontop of maintanance and what not and I understand I'll get to enjoy maintaining this truck more frequently than a "toyota." I just would like someone with me who entirely knows what they're looking at. Ya know

Main things I would check.Truck cold.

What is the condition of the fluids?

Do they smell burnt? Do they look fresh? Is there coolant in the overflow tank? Is the radiator full? Is the bottom of the truck dry?

I would start the truck and watch the tailpipe for the puff of blue smoke (bad valve seals,no bigge) Then pull off the oil fill cap and rev the throttle manually. If it smokes out of there then run away,it has blowby which means the engine needs a rebuild.

If everything seems fine, then take it for a drive. When you give it throttle it should plant it's ass.The 1-2 shift should be stupid hard and if you ain't doing 50 before you know it then the truck has probs.

May be something as simple as wrong plugs and misadjusted TV cable,a vac leak,or hell just about anything. That's why it's good to have a local board member check it out.

One thing for sure,if the performance does not impress you, something is wrong with it.

Thanks for the input Jimmy. I'm still waitin to see if anyone is willing to go with me. I know these trucks can be tempermental so a small problem like plugs or a vac leak can hinder performance substantially.

Post in the Western forum and include "Seattle" in the title. Just to cover your bases. Not everyone reads every forum.
