Ouch! Wheel shop bent me over...

I went to my local Les Schwab today to have 2 new 315/35-17 tires put on the my ZR1's.
I took in just the wheels w/ worn out tires & new tires in for a dismount/mount, 2-chrome valve stems & balance.
Originally I was told $54 for the work.

I go back to pick up my shit & the gal behind the counter told me she made a mistake & that it was going to cost more, they called my house & left a message, blah, blah & were waiting for me to call back to give the OK.
Now it's EIGHTY FOUR FREAKIN DOLLARS to do the work!

Well, it's 5pm & they're closing & I want them done, cause I don't want to make another trip someplace else to get them done. They ask me if the price is OK. I said "No, not really, but go ahead & do it".:squint:

Then they tell me they charge more because the tires aren't passenger car tires (what in the hell is a Corvette then?).
And that the additional charge is because of the aluminum wheels & because if they damage them, blah, blah, blah. Yeah, like they're really going to do something about it if they damage them! I starting to smell BS like I've just bathed in it.

I've always gone to this place since they opened & I know last time when I took the new Z06 wheels & tires in it didn't cost me $160 for mount, stems & balance. WTF?!?!

I think I got screwed today.

Re: Ouch! Wheel shop bent me over...

I have found some places are just plain afraid of the vette wheels or any nice aluminum wheel and a low profile tire? I had a hard time finding any one back a while ago to mount some 315-30's on 18" zo6 wheels for anything near reasonable price wise but finally got it done for like $50 which included the fronts tires being mounted and balanced also . Then another time I went to a place and had them take my 315's and 245's off one set of zr1 wheels and mount and balance on another set and was told when I went to pay the guy at the counter to just give something to the techs that did the swap for me. So that one was just a $20 tip.

That $80 and the reasons seemed like big time bs though.

Yep you got screwed. I paid $79 yesterday: dismount from truck, remove old tires, install new ones not purchased from them, balancing & reinstall.

$100/tire Sumitomo's. Nothing fancy, no bells, no whistles & no electronic pressure monitors.

Royally screwed. I agree, 20 bucks should have been the case, regardless of what kind of tires they are. If they're competent, it should be cake for them, and take them 10 minutes to do. Low profile tires are easy if you know how to mount them correctly. Even RFT can can be easily mounted. You should have went to a Discount/America's Tire Co. if there was one near you. They pretty much charge X amount of dollars to mount and balance, regardless of what size wheel and tire they are. And if they just so happen to damage something, they usually really good at taking responsibility for it.

Re: Ouch! Wheel shop bent me over...

That is kinda high for mounting tires. I do tires at work, and I do everything, low profile, run flats, you name it I do it. I've done so many tires that just about anything is easy. Some people are saying $20 to mount and balance, to me that seems kinda cheap but I guess it depends where you are. I work in a rich area of NJ where almost everyone has nice cars and lots of money, except me. We would have charged you 30 or 35.
Some places charge more if you supply your own tires and dont buy them from the place that is mounting them. I mount my own tires so I dont have to pay shit. FYI people if anyone is near me in NJ I am willing to mount tires for your SY and TY. It would have to be on select Saturdays at my work and I would only charge you syty'ers $10 bucks a tire, or a pizza.

Thats what I pay for 4 tires on my wifes lexus on 17's. You got kinda screwed. You should have fought with them more....they probably would have made it lower. I took my dads Chevelle to an exhaust shop one time to have two pieces of about 30 inch pipe flanged and bent and weld header collectors on becasue I put an engine in and used exhaust manifolds instead of his original headers but his exhaust was brand new so I I just want to have pipes made to take place of the headers. The guy tried to charge me $200 plus tax. I read him the riot act in front of 5 other customers so he knocked it down to $150 out the door which was still too much but I was just so mad I took it. ALot of time, I swear these service managers make up the prices as they go to see what they can get out of you.

My firend with a ZR-1 had a hard time finding to mount new tires on his ZR-1, he ended paying similiar price you did. A lot of places would NOT even touch his wheels (partially because of the wheel sensors)

I'm curious what the individual charges came out to be?

Re: Ouch! Wheel shop bent me over...

I remember when I couldnt get my Zr-1's balanced correctly by the place that put the tires on, I had to to the GM dealership. They had someone there that only worked on Corvette wheels and he used the Road-force balancing which corrected the problem. I believe it was about $90 for all 4.

Re: Ouch! Wheel shop bent me over...

I used to go to Americas Tire Store, but it's 30 minutes away. Several times when I brought the Syclone in for a balance, they would do it for FREE!!!
I don't know why. I'd just go to the counter to pay when it was done & they told me nevermind it was on the house. SWEET!

Then this Les Scwab opened up in town which made it a 5 minute drive. I figured I'd save myself some time & gas by going to Les Schwab. Looks like not so good of a tradeoff.

There's another shop closer, Wheel Works. I've used them before & never had a problem. I guess I'll call & check on the price to have the same work done on the fronts before I just drive over there & have them do it.
