question about shocks

Getting new tires all around and thought it might be a good idea to do shocks at the same time. 93 Ty has 53,000 miles on it...only 5,000 from me (2nd owner) so I don't have much to go by as far as determaning if the stock shocks are ready to go or not. Truck doesn't seem to ride too bad but could probably be better. Did a search and found stockers should be replaced after 40,000 miles or so. About 1,500 miles back the compressor for the leveling system was running almost continuosly....drained the battery once....it stopped running all at once and havn't heard it since. My question is should I get new stock replacement shocks or aftermarket such as KYB Monomax ($236 for 4 from Tire Rack) or Koni Monotube ($410 for 4 from truckperformance). Thanks

Re: question about shocks

i'll try to simplify to hopefully get a response. What is the best way to tell if you need new shocks? Are gm stock replacements the way to go, or aftermarket? if aftermarket, wich ones?

the general concensus is that the KYBs are good replacements. should you change? that's up to you and your pocket book. i personally like the stock bilsteins better.

Re: question about shocks

KYB Monomax shows KYB565048 and KYB565047 I believe are what everyone goes for.. I have the bilstein HD's which tend to be too stiff for sytyers which is why the monomax's are popular i guess.

thanks. i didn't know they came with bilsteins from the factory. are these the same as the hd's that 'pimp posted about? if i changed to kyb, would that mean doing away with the automatic leveling system?

Re: question about shocks

Everyone likes their Monomax's. Except me. They were too soft for me, so I threw in some Koni's, set stiff! Better, but still not stiff enough!!!! I need stiffer springs!

Re: question about shocks

thanks for the replies. basicall i'm wondering if i want to stay with the stock leveling system, would that limit me to a one of a kind stock replacement shock, or do the aftermarket ones that your suggesting connect to the air. what is the advantage to the air leveling system? if its dissabled now, should i just remove the entire system, or is it worth it to fix it...say if the compressor is broke or something
